Harbinger Comic Book Movie Targeting 2021 Release Date
Paramount and Valiant Entertainment's Harbinger movie is targeting a 2021 release date. In the age of superhero movies and TV shows dominated by Marvel and DC, Valiant is attempting to launch a universe of their own. These plans began earlier in 2020 with the release of Bloodshot. The live-action movie starring Vin Diesel hit theaters right before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the movie industry.
Even though Bloodshot wasn't a box office or critical hit, there is still hope that Valiant's wide-ranging source material can be mined and deliver quality movies. One of the other titles in development is an adaptation of the Harbinger comics. The film has been in the works for a few years now, but Harbinger most recently changed studios, as it moved from Sony (who made Bloodshot) to Paramount along with the majority of other Valiant characters. Despite the lack of updates on the status of the film, it appears Harbinger could be released as soon as next year.
A recent press release from Valiant Entertainment revealed that Harbinger is projected to be released in 2021. The film will be directed by Justin Tipping but has yet to cast anyone to play the lead role of Pete Stancheck. Paramount has so far not given Harbinger an official release date, but this announcement from Valiant indicates the plan is for it to arrive next year.
When Harbinger was acquired by Paramount in 2019, it was reported that the movie would undergo a redevelopment process. There haven't been any updates on the status of Harbinger since, but the studios have some belief that a 2021 release is possible it appears. Whether or not that is possible remains to be seen, as this would require the movie to start production by the end of 2020. Without any signs of pre-production or casting taking place, it is currently difficult to imagine Harbinger hitting a 2021 release unless development moves incredibly fast from this point on.
If Paramount and Valiant can release Harbinger next year, it will be the latest high-budget action franchise movie on Paramount's 2021 calendar. Due to all the delays from 2020, Top Gun: Maverick is now scheduled to arrive next summer, while Paramount is also behind Mission: Impossible 7's fall release. They also have A Quiet Place Part II, Chris Pratt's The Tomorrow War, and possibly Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (if it gets delayed too). Next year will likely be packed with blockbusters as 2020 and 2021 movies could be crammed together, which might make it difficult for Harbinger to break out. But, without an official release date from the studio and the uncertainty around production, there's no guarantee the movie will even come next year.
