Adventurous Shows To Watch If You Like Outer Banks | ScreenRant
Just in time for summer, Netflix decided to debut the teen drama that involves mystery, treasure and a good looking cast; what more does a viewer need for a binge-fest? Outer Banks doesn't take itself too seriously and it's a bit out there, but sometimes that's what makes a good television show. When a group of local teenagers from the shadier side of town stumble upon a treasure, the audience knows they're in for a treat.
The whole first season is available on Netflix, but while fans eagerly wait for a second season, there are a ton of other shows with hints of drama, adventure and teenage angst. Some of them are new shows, some only had a few seasons and a couple are throwbacks; but they all have major similarities to Outer Banks and that's all that matters.
10 All-American (2018-TBD)
All American tells the story of a high school football player from the "wrong" side of town, being recruited by Beverly Hills High School. This story coincides with Outer Banks, as two worlds collide and drama ensues. This show isn't a work of fiction, as it's based on the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger.
There may not be any hidden treasure, but it is chalk-full of great storylines and an even better cast. It can be found on The CW or Amazon Prime Video.
9 Dynasty (2017-TBD)
After one episode of Outer Banks, viewers will know it's a bit of a teen soap drama; if the audience is a fan of juicy plots, they'll enjoy Dynasty, as well. Dynasty is about the 1% elite and their businesses, drama, love lives, etc. It's a juicy tale of what the ultra-wealthy community deals with and how they deal with it.
There's four seasons out so far and although there's been characters changes throughout, it's still just as good and filled with fictional gossip.
8 Riverdale (2017-TBD)
There was Gossip Girl, there was Glee and now, there's Riverdale. Easily one of the most popular teen dramas to date, Riverdale tells the story of the characters that were once in the Archie Comics. The storyline mainly focuses on four main characters: Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead, where they get into conflict, hook ups and mysterious secrets circling the town of Riverdale.
This may not be about gold and a treasure map, but the small-town feel and community is definitely on the same wavelength as Outer Banks.
7 The Society (2019-TBD)
If fans of Outer Banks are missing the adventure it brought to their screens, The Society is a good stand-in to enjoy until season two comes out. After all of the parents disappear in this small town, the teenagers that were left behind have to re-build their lives. These kids weren't neglected like The Pogues in Outer Banks, but it's a story that revolves around the teenagers in the show and how they make their lives work in a different world.
6 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020)
When 13 Reasons Why came to Netflix, it made headlines for its sensitive topics that include drug use and suicide. This show was more raw than others, simply because the creators of the show really wanted to dig into the topic of self harm and how serious it really is. This show is a bit darker than Outer Banks, but it encompasses the teen drama and finding love in high school.
5 Euphoria (2019-TBD)
Starring sought-after actress Zendaya, Euphoria paints a dark picture of what high school can be like and how the students battle addiction, violence and their sexuality. The casting is phenomenal and the premise of the show is the reality of what influence and home life can be like for young minds.
Of course, this show takes on a darker tone than Outer Banks, but it's a great show to binge-watch and immerse into with the brilliant film shots, wardrobe and bleak-feeling of being right there with the characters.
4 Bloodline (2015-2017)
Netflix Original's Bloodline might be over, but that doesn't mean it didn't have an impact on viewers that took a chance on it. While Outer Banks appeals to a younger crowd, some could say Bloodline is the adult version of it. Just like Outer Banks, Bloodline is set in a hot, southern state and will give viewers the vibe they liked in Outer Banks.
3 Elite (2018-TBD)
Like the working class Pogues in Outer Banks, the teens in Elite are striving to live life the best way they can, while uncovering a murder. Someone close to them has died and they are set on finding out what happened. These teens are students at a private school which makes them teeter-totter on the line of Pogues and Kooks, which makes this even more enticing to dig into.
It's set in Spain so it does come along with subtitles, but it doesn't deter away from the entertainment it provides for those who don't speak Spanish.
2 Animal Kingdom (2016-TBD)
Although Animal Kingdom follows a family that's made up of mostly adults, it doesn't mean it's not filled with just the right amount of drama, tough situations and adventure. Joshua "J" Cody, a 17-year old who moves in with his freeloading relatives in Southern California, is immersed into the world of drugs, illegal business and danger. It's ran for five seasons thus far and it's available for watching pleasure on Amazon Prime Video.
1 The O.C. (2003-2007)
In the early to late 2000's, The O.C. ran the teen drama world with a beautiful cast, a beautiful backdrop and a juicy storyline. Although the series has been done since 2007, it doesn't mean that the show doesn't stand on its own feet in regards to likability.
It's similar to Outer Banks in a way that it follows the rich and privilege, as well as the main character, Ryan Atwood, being from the wrong side of the tracks, with a point to prove and a chip on his shoulder.
