Caitlyn Jenner and Sophia Hutchins' Complicated Relationship Timeline Explained

Pepperdine University graduate Sophia Hutchins has a background in finance and economics. In university, Hutchins always planned a career in finance while identifying as Scott, a gay man. But things changed for the reigning class president in 2016, when she took a semester off to transition. Even back then, watching Jenner on 20/20 served as an inspiration to Hutchins as she embraced her new life. She re-joined college and hired a hair and makeup glam team. Her hairstylist and makeup artist then introduced Hutchins to her idol, Jenner. In 2017, Jenner hired Hutchins as her manager and asked Hutchins to move into her house in Malibu.
Hutchins was prepared to pursue a career in finance in New York when she started working with Jenner. According to Hutchins, Jenner didn’t have a manager after her divorce with Kris. “It was a financial s**t show,” Hutchins said about Jenner’s life when they met while speaking to Juicy Scoop. But the 49-year age gap between Hutchins and Jenner set the rumor mills on overdrive. The pair jet-set to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in October to ring in Jenner’s birthday, and Hutchins was seen with the former Olympian at Kendall’s 22nd birthday party in November 2017. Jenner then attended the 2018 ESPYs with Hutchins in tow, which led people to label Hutchins as the KUWTK star’s girlfriend. It was their first official public outing after staying in the same house, and Jenner’s Instagram caption, “life is good,” sparked more gossip. Soon enough, Hutchins during a Q&A session with her followers on Instagram, replied to a fan’s “Are you in a relationship?” question with a heart-eyes emoji. But when another fan asked if it was Cait, her reply was a rolling eyes emoji. Meanwhile, rumors of the pair being engaged and wanting to have a baby started making the rounds mid-2018.
August saw Caitlyn breaking her silence on the odd relationship by saying, “We are not going to get into that, but we are very close. We’re kind of inseparable." "Inseparable" was certainly an apt word, as Jenner and Hutchins continued to attend family events side-by-side. In October, Hutchins denied being romantically involved with her housemate by telling Out, “I would not use the word girlfriend. I would not say we’re dating. I would say we’re partners.” She was also appointed as CEO of the Caitlyn Jenner Foundation, which was created with an aim to promote equality and combat discrimination against transgender people. Jenner was joined by her platonic partner at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party in 2019 and the twosome rang in Hutchins’ 23rd birthday together with friends and family at their $3.58 million Malibu mansion.
The model soon launched her own company, Lumasol, which was based in New York. Her commute back and forth between the Big Apple and Los Angeles ignited rumors of her separation from Jenner, but the two stayed close. Her product, an FDA-approved odorless SPF 50+ sunscreen mist raised around $3 million in seed funding. In December 2019, Hutchins spoke to NYTimes to confirm once again that she wasn’t ever romantically involved with Jenner. She told the publication that she was, in fact, dating a 30-year-old gentleman who graduated from Harvard and worked on Wall Street.
Hutchins recently spoke about putting a lock on her bedroom door, as Caitlyn walked into her room while she was getting intimate with her lover. "Caitlyn decided to barge into my room while I had a friend over and you know... kind of saw a lot of things happening," she said. "It's kind of like living with your parents,” Hutchins added, further emphasizing that her relationship with Jenner is “very parental, very protective." Despite the odd circumstances of their relationship, Hutchins now declaring that Jenner “feels like family” should put the rumors to rest…at least for a while.
