X-Men's Cyclops Is Descended From The Pharaohs of Egypt

0

The X-Men's Cyclops is descended from the Pharaohs of Egypt. Scott Summers was the first of the X-Men, and over the years he's proved himself their greatest leader. Charles Xavier schooled Cyclops for leadership from the moment he first met him, and first placed him in charge of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters when he was just a teenager. Not only is Cyclops a capable leader, though; he's also phenomenally powerful. By the time of the superhero Civil War, Iron Man was measuring Cyclops' energy output at 2 gigawatts a second, the equivalent of a nuclear power station. When Wolverine joked God had given Cyclops a "nuke" in his eyes, he wasn't exaggerating.

But here's the curious thing; mutant power appears to run through the Summers bloodline. His brother Havok is another mutant powerhouse, able to absorb cosmic energy and project it in devastating blasts of power. The third Summers brother, Gabriel, is so powerful an energy manipulator he was able to overcome the entire Shi'ar Imperial Guard and go one-on-one with Black Bolt of the Inhumans. Readers have gotten to see various Summers children courtesy of time travel, and they include mutants like Cable and Rachel Grey who have traditionally been considered Omega level. What is it about the Summers bloodline?

An explanation is provided in Uncanny X-Men #54, when a villain called the Living Pharaoh kidnapped Cyclops' brother Havok. According to the Living Pharaoh, all the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt were mutants, and the Summers family are descended from them. This fits with ideas developed in the current Jonathan Hickman run, which has rewritten the history of the mutant race and revealed there have always been mutants. Most have been hated and feared, condemned as "witchbreed," but it makes sense that others would be worshiped. Apocalypse himself was one such Egyptian ruler, a mutant who claimed the throne; given the Living Monolith's comments, it's even possible Cyclops is descended from Apocalypse himself.

The mutant geneticist Mr. Sinister came to believe the Summers bloodline had unique potential. He monitored the Summers family for generations, and when Cyclops was apparently orphaned, Sinister established the orphanage where Cyclops was brought up under his care. It was Sinister who figured out how to control Cyclops' optic blasts with ruby quartz. And Sinister remained obsessed with the Summers bloodline for years, even throwing caution to the wind when he was offered the Summers genetic matrix by the time traveling mutant Stryfe. He was played for a fool, unwittingly unleashing the Legacy Virus in his haste.

The evidence seems to suggest Sinister was right. The Summers family is descended from the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt, and Cyclops' children are mutants of tremendous power as well. No doubt they will become even more important in the Krakoan era, now the entire mutant race has gathered on the living island of Krakoa.
