Every New DC Movie Trailer From DC FanDome | Screen Rant
DC FanDome, the virtual DC Comics-focused ComicCon too big for reality, offered up several new trailers for the most highly anticipated superhero films of 2020 and 2021. Many of these trailers offered the first glimpse of these films in any format, though some had little to offer beyond brief teases of the films to come.
Though it was born of the COVID-19 crisis, DC FanDome was a rousing success by most metrics, even as its schedule was changed days before the event was set to start, with many of its scheduled panels pushed back to a second DC FanDome event scheduled for September 12, 2020. The event reported few, if any, technical issues as it was underway. Inevitably, topics relating to the many films, television series, video games, and, of course, comic books, discussed during the event's panels dominated social media as the day progressed.
Justice League Snyder Cut Trailer Breakdown: 30 Story Reveals & Secrets
It's hard to gauge which of DC FanDome's offerings was the most well-received. Zack Snyder aficionados sang the praises of the first teaser trailer of his cut of the Justice League, yet there was also a wave of well-wishes for Wonder Woman 1984's second trailer. The event also saw the first official footage for both The Suicide Squad and The Batman released - the latter an unexpected early trailer - along with an animated teaser trailer for the Black Adam film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the popular anti-hero.
The second full trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 was filled with many astonishing visuals. Yet fans are still being left to wonder (no pun intended) about some of the major mysteries of the film, such as how Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) was able to successfully hide her existence from the world for so many years or how her lover Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) is seemingly brought back from the dead to the world of 1984, where Diana must take a hand in guiding him through life in Man's World as he once guided her during World War II. Hilarity will no doubt ensue.
The biggest reveal in the trailer is the first glimpse of Kristen Wiig in her final form as the Cheetah. While early photos depicted Wiig in one scene wearing a leopard-print dress (in a seeming nod to the classic Cheetah, who was a thief in an exotic cat costume little different from Catwoman), the new trailer confirmed that Dr. Barbara Minerva would eventually be transformed into some manner of bestial humanoid with a grudge against the Amazon princess. While little has been said about the story of the movie, it has been speculated that the relationship between Diana and Barbara will be based upon their friendship gone bad in the 2016 Wonder Woman: Year One graphic novel.
There is some question as to whether or not Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in theaters as intended. Currently there are no plans to do a direct-to-streaming release, as Disney did with their live-action Mulan release. Still, there has been some speculation Warner Bros. might consider this based on ticket sales as movie theaters around the world begin reopening in the face of COVID-19 closures. If the movie-going public still seems reluctant to risk going to the movies, Warner Bros. plans may change. As of right now, Wonder Woman 1984 is still scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 2, 2020.
When Justice League was originally released in 2017, it was not well received. Critics and fans alike complained that it seemed liked two halves of two drastically different movies that had been brought together badly; a fair assessment given that the film's original director, Zack Snyder, stopped work on the film due to a family emergency and Avengers director Joss Whedon was brought in to finish the film. This gave rise to a movement that pushed Warner Bros. to allow Snyder the chance to finish the film as he had intended to make it.
The Snyder Cut of Justice League will be released on the HBO Max streaming service sometime in 2021, though no official release date has been announced. The teaser trailer shows several short scenes cut from the theatrical release which Snyder had hinted at to his fans on-line, including a glimpse of the New God tyrant Darksied and an incognito Martian Manhunter. The Snyder Cut will be released as both four one-hour television episodes and as a massive four-hour film.
Directed by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame, The Suicide Squad promises to be much closer in tone to the comics that inspired it than the critically reviled 2016 Suicide Squad. During his panel at DC FanDome, Gunn specifically evoked the original comic book run by writers John Ostrander and Kim Yale, claiming his film would be a spiritual sequel to their stories rather than a direct adaptation. In simple terms, this meant that the movie would feature a lot of violence and a large cast of expendable C-List characters who few people had heard of and even fewer people would care about.
Beyond confirming which actors had been cast as which characters, the trailer also revealed the costumes for all of the films' protagonists. The trailer was a simple and straight-forward affair, which showed each character from the comics before showing their live-action counterpart and the actor that will be playing them. Despite an all-star cast of beloved actors, fans would do well to follow Gunn's advice during the first casting announcement; "Don't get too attached."
Set in a universe apart from the DCEU, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as a young Bruce Wayne starting his second year as Batman. The film is loosely based on the Batman: Zero Year storyline from the comics. It will also severe as the setting of a Gotham PD series on HBO Max, which will be established as a prequel to The Batman centered around Jim Gordon's investigations into the early reports of Batman's activities.
While The Riddler (Paul Dano) will serve as the film's chief villain, the origins of many of the classic Bat-Villains will be explored in The Batman. These include Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and Colin Farrell as The Penguin. The trailer also hints at the introduction of The Joker, as Batman fights a man dressed as a clown (who is part of a gang of clowns) and declares "I'm vengeance," when asked who he is.
Perhaps the most obscure character to be given a solo film in DC Comics history, Black Adam was originally an enemy of Shazam; a fallen champion of the same wizard who empowered Billy Batson from ancient times. The character was revamped in the pages of JSA, with Black Adam claiming to have been corrupted by his modern-day host as he sought to redeem himself among the heroes of the modern world. His claims would later come to be doubted, as Black Adam sought a bloody form of justice that most modern heroes would classify as vengeance.
The animated teaser-trailer for Black Adam speaks to the character's history in the JSA revamp, as he speaks of having been a slave blessed with magic who fought to free his people only to be betrayed and imprisoned by those who empowered him in the first place. Filming on Black Adam has not started yet and most of the cast has yet to be announced. However, it has been confirmed that the JSA in Black Adam will include Hawkman and Dr. Fate as well as the previously announced duo of Cyclone and Atom Smasher.
