Wonder Woman's Toughest Fight Is Against An Evil Version of Snapchat
Warning, this article contains spoilers for Wonder Woman #761
Wonder Woman is one of the Justice League's big three heroes alongside Superman and Batman. She can compete with some of DC's strongest heroes and villains but what happens when she is turned against the public? In Wonder Woman #761, Diana wakes up on a table to questions from medical staff. She barely remembers what happened before she got there. The heroine just has a strong sense that something is off.
Her eyes are still glowing pink from her hallucination. One of the medical professionals explains that a new photo app may be responsible for her strange behavior. A photo app called Odypix has just launched and appears to be at the epicenter of all the recent chaos. Wonder Woman learns that she attacked innocent civilians under the influence of the app. It changed her perception to view everyone around her as enemies, specifically Parademons. After attacking the hallucinatory Parademons Wonder W0man was labeled a menace by the media.
In Wonder Woman #761 by Mariko Tamaki, Carlo Barberi, Matt Santorelli, and Alejandro Sanchez, Wonder Woman still feels the effects of the app after waking from her episode. She begins to see the woman helping her as the villain Cheetah. Meanwhile, an ex-soldier has been exposed to the evil app. The elderly man abandons his 60th birthday party after he hallucinates an attack. The app compels him to break into a heavily guarded facility and kill the security so he can launch a missile. Wonder Woman discovers the app is a product of the psychic villain Maxwell Lord.
But Maxwell reveals that he never launched the app when roped in by The Lasso of Truth. The sinister photo application that exhibits similar powers to Lord's psychic persuasion has been launched by another member of the Lord family, his daughter. Wonder Woman rushes off to stop a missile launched by one of the app's victims as she contemplates working alongside Maxwell Lord. The creation of an evil app forces readers to question the possibility of the terror in these panels becoming a reality.
What if the apps that consume most of people's time and capture so many moments in their lives also influenced their way of thinking? Influencer marketing has taken the business world by storm because people can use social media to encourage certain behavior. The Odypix app in Wonder Woman #761 shows what could happen if developers attempted to impose their will on the masses. Writer Mariko Tamaki explores the evil possibilities of the smartphone society has grown so attached to. In a world of rapidly advancing social media and technology, Maxwell Lord's daughter proves that attention can indeed be dangerous.
