Brooklyn Nine-Nine star claims show must ‘bust the myth that cops breaks laws for the greater good’ in season 8

BROOKLYN Nine-Nine star Andre Braugher believes there is a lot of work to do to change the way police officers are portrayed on TV shows.

The Captain Raymond Holt star says cops need to be shown more in line with what is taking place in real life and that police breaking the law ‘for the greater good’ is a myth that needs to be destroyed.

Andre, 58, said on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast: “It’s a very complicated subject, but I think they have to be portrayed much more realistically, in terms of this: The convention… that police breaking the law is okay because somehow it’s in the service of some greater good, is a myth that needs to be destroyed.

Furthermore, the actor said his own show needs to do the same.

He continued: “We’re going into an eighth season with a new challenge which is that everyone’s knowledge and feelings about police… have been profoundly affected.

“What we have from [creator] Dan [Goor] is a commitment to write a smart show that will not attempt to hide itself in a fantasy. So the Nine-Nine is going to have to deal with what we know about the New York Police Department.”

The Emmy-winning star has portrayed a variety of law enforcement officers over his 30-plus year career.

The first was alongside Telly Savalas’ Kojak in the ’80s, and then as Detective Frank Pembleton in NBC’s revered ’90s drama Homicide: Life on the Street.

He has recently earned himself another Emmy nomination for his role in the New York comedy.

His co-star Chelsea Peretti, 42, gave her thoughts on the matter and said the show’s bosses should “defund the police” in the new series.

The Gina Linetti actress believes her show may tackle the calls to change the police and justice system in the upcoming series 8.

The actress, who plays Gina Linetti in the show, told IndiaWire: “I know [the writers are] working to reshape this coming season. I’m very curious and interested to see what they do.

“I get what people are saying. I get their concerns, and you know, my thought was like, ‘They should just defund the police!’ And have everyone going to do community-oriented work.

“That’s probably not what they’re going to do. But I’m looking forward to seeing what they do because I know they have to respond to this, the unfortunate reality that policing has been and is.”

Stream the first six seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Netflix and catch episodes of the comedy on E4.
