AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department is asking the public to come forward with information after three homicides happened within 24 hours.

Two of the shootings happened in southeast Austin, and the third happened in downtown.

Here’s a timeline of when the shootings happened and what we know.

Wednesday afternoon

Around 2:45 p.m., police received calls after a fight escalated into a shooting that left one man dead. It happened in the 6600 block of Janes Ranch Road near Onion Creek.

The man who died was identified as Derrick Amoriko. A second man allegedly involved in the incident was taken to the hospital.

Austin police said in a press conference that the people involved were known to each other, and there were claims of self-defense. It has yet to be determined if anyone will be charged.

Wednesday night

Around 10:48 p.m., police received calls about a shooting at an apartment complex near the 2100 block of Elmont Drive. Officers reportedly found 21-year-old Paul Brown shot after they received reports of many involved in a disturbance and multiple shots fired.

Brown was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Austin police said those involved are believed to know each other or be acquainted with one another.

Police didn’t say whether they had identified a suspect.

Thursday morning

The last shooting reportedly claimed the life of a woman who was experiencing homeless in the area. Police said she was shot after a fight between a group of 60 hurricane evacuees reportedly broke out near Sixth Street and Brazos Street.

Officers received multiple calls of “dozens and dozens” of people fighting, and police said they later found out it was between groups from Port Arthur and Beaumont.

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she later died, and police believe she was not involved in the disturbance.

It is unknown why such a large group of people were meeting in the middle of the night, but police said they may consider stepping up patrols in the area if they see a lingering problem.

Austin police are working with the Beaumont and Port Arthur Police Departments to track down any information about those involved. They do believe some have left the area.

Anyone with information about these three shootings can call the Austin Police Department Homicide tip line at (512) 974-TIPS.
