Key & Peele Show How "Hula Hoop" Training Can Get A Little Too Intimate

0

Key & Peele's "Doin' It With My Bro" sees a hula hoop practice session between brothers get a little too intimate and sweaty. It's kind of fascinating to see Jordan Peele's trajectory from one half of comic duo Key & Peele to becoming a modern horror auteur. It was clear from some of the sketches on the Comedy Central series he was a horror fan, but once the series ended in 2015 it felt like a major left turn to see him announced as the director of a Blumhouse horror movie. That was Get Out, which arrived in 2017 and was considered an instant classic of the genre that earned Peele a Best Original Screenplay Oscar.

The movie also grossed over $250 million worldwide and Peele followed up with 2019's doppelganger horror Us, which may not have received the unanimous praise of his previous film but it still attracted good reviews and was a big hit. He's also the producer behind the upcoming legacy sequel Candyman by director Nia DaCosta and TV series Lovecraft Country and CBS' Twilight Zone reboot. While he's largely stepped away from acting since making the switch behind the scenes, Jordan Peele does act as host on the latter anthology show. He's also set to reunite with Keegan-Michael Key for upcoming stop-motion animation Wendell And Wild.

Some of the best Key & Peele skits took a silly concept and maximized how insane they could get. That's true of their "Doin' It With My Bro" skit, which is kind of hard to discuss without giving away the big reveal. The sketch sees the comedians play two brothers, who are filmed from the neck up and appear to be engaged in a physical activity that usually involves three people.

Jordon Peele's character insists on making things a little too intimate, as he whispers to Keegan-Michael Key's brother to maintain eye contact with him as they sweat together. It's when he insists on holding hands that things get too much for his brother, revealing they were just practicing hula hooping together. That does call into question when they needed to whisper while they were talking though, but logic in a Key & Peele sketch is never really the point.

Key & Peele's "Doin' It With My Bro" is a short and silly skit - which is the kind they did very well. The hula hoop reveal is a good twist and Jordon Peele's sheer, creepy commitment to his character is what makes it land.
