How I Met Your Mother: 10 Most Emotional Moments On The Show, Ranked

0

How I Met Your Mother is known for being a cult classic when it comes to sitcoms, but one thing that seemed to set it apart from the rest of the pack was the show's ability to get serious. Sometimes it came out of nowhere and sometimes we could see it coming, but either way, fans appreciated the emotional rollercoaster that they were taken on by this crop of characters.

Emotions can boil to the surface in many different forms and the writers of HIMYM knew that, which is why they took it upon themselves to try and draw so many different feelings out of the audience. Today, we're going to try and pick through our 10 favorite emotional moments from the show's run.

10 Ted Gets Left At The Altar

While it may have been an interesting storyline for a while, everyone could tell that Ted and Stella weren’t meant to be - and we think that, deep down, Ted himself probably knew that too.

Unfortunately, Stella decided to let Ted know that she felt the same way in the most heartbreaking manner imaginable. She left him at the altar, ruthlessly going off with her ex Tony in the process. It was a really tough one to take.

9 Robin Can’t Have Kids

Things may have turned out okay for Robin depending on how you viewed the final episode of the show, but it really was devastating when fans came to learn that she couldn’t have children.

Ted did his best to cheer her up, but this is the kind of stuff that HIMYM has always done a pretty good job of dealing with. It’s a real-life issue that Robin had to address, and the show wanted to make it part of her long-term story.

8 Tracy Says Goodbye To Max

When Louis proposed to Tracy and she went outside to say goodbye to Max, her first love, our hearts broke a little. In the back of our minds, she was always going to end up with Ted anyway, but the scene was done so brilliantly that it really did hook us in.

Tracy had been through her own fair share of issues over the years, and this moment showed just how unbelievably strong and mature she was.

7 Robin Picks Kevin Over Barney

As the years go by, it does become harder and harder to figure out why Robin didn’t just go for it with Barney.

She cheated on Kevin, Barney cheated on Nora, and the next logical step was for them to be together. Barney held up his end of the bargain, but when Robin shows up to the bar with Kevin, the whole audience just goes numb - and rightly so, because we all felt like they were meant to be together.

6 Barney Argues With His Dad

“If you were going to be some lame suburban dad, why couldn’t you be that for me?” Barney could never get away from the fact that his father left him when he was young, and when the two eventually reconnect, it was still difficult for him to come to terms with what had happened.

The outburst when he’s trying to steal the basketball hoop serves as Barney finally letting his emotions out after all those years.

5 Lily & Marshall Break Up

Ted and Robin finally getting together at the end of the first season really is a great moment, but it’s followed up by Marshall and Lily splitting up. Many of us have never come to terms with the fact that Lily decided to throw her future away with the man of her dreams, especially when knowing how long they’d already been together by that point.

They end up back together soon enough but seeing Marshall in the rain like that was a real shocker.

4 Barney Meets His Daughter

The dissolution of Barney’s marriage with Robin felt very, very cheap, especially after a whole season was dedicated to their wedding.

Yet even after one of the most insane creative decisions in recent memory, some fans decided to forgive the writers. Why? Because in the final episode, Barney became a father. Ellie was born, and at that moment, the life of Barney Stinson changed forever. He swore to change his ways in the name of raising his baby girl, and he did just that.

3 “In 45 Days”

At the time many of us probably wouldn’t have been able to work out the deeper meaning behind Ted’s “in 45 days” speech, but even at the time, it was a superb scene to watch unfold.

After sitting down at the bar all night long, Ted dreams about going to the mother’s house just so he can soak up 45 extra days with her by his side. When looking back on it, it’s more than a little bit heartwrenching.

2 Tracy Dies

We spend almost a decade waiting to meet the mother, and then in the blink of an eye, she gets killed off. This seemingly came down to the stubbornness of the writers who, against the consensus of the fans, decided to stick with their vision that they had when they first made the show.

Tracy’s death is treated as little more than a passing comment in the final narration, and as much as we want to say it didn’t get to us, it did. It really did.

1 Marshall’s Dad Dies

The first major death that the show had to deal with was the sudden demise of Marshall’s father. After an episode that was full of hints in the form of a rather ominous countdown, the big reveal is made when Lily arrives to inform Marshall that his father has passed away.

The two cry together and share a deep embrace, but in the long run, Marshall does keep his legacy alive in a big way by naming his first son Marvin.

SPECIAL MENTION: Barney's proposal to Robin was great, but the overriding sense of joy just about outweighed the journey fans had been taken on with their relationship.
