The 5 Best (& 5 Worst) '90s Dramas | ScreenRant

0

With the Hollywood studio system taking risks for the first time since the “New Hollywood” movement of the ‘70s and indie cinema making a comeback courtesy of idiosyncratic directors like Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, the ‘90s brought some terrific movies to audiences. Some of the best films of the decade, from Fight Club to The Shawshank Redemption, weren’t appreciated in their time and later became classics when they finally found the right audience.

Not every movie that came out during the ‘90s was great, however. There was still plenty of terrible Oscar bait getting produced, and where there are great movies, there will always be derivative knock-offs.

10 Best: Good Will Hunting (1997)

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck became disillusioned with the audition scene as struggling actors and decided to write a starring vehicle for themselves, Good Will Hunting, which made them the youngest recipients of the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Damon stars as Will, a Harvard janitor with a genius intellect that the professors around him want to take advantage of. Will isn’t interested because he wants to maintain his working-class grit, and a psychiatrist played by an Oscar-winning Robin Williams is the only intellectual who can relate to him on his level, having come from a similar background.

9 Worst: Indecent Proposal (1993)

The premise of Indecent Proposal is a lot more famous than the movie itself. Robert Redford plays a billionaire who approaches a man struggling to finance a real estate project (Woody Harrelson) with an offer of $1 million to spend a night with his wife (Demi Moore).

The couple really needs the money, so they take the offer, but the husband regrets it immediately and, predictably, it tears their marriage apart in a series of dreadfully clichéd scenes.

8 Best: American Beauty (1999)

This movie is a difficult one to stomach these days, ever since Kevin Spacey’s sordid secrets came to light, because he stars as a middle-aged man who becomes infatuated with his daughter’s teenage friend, but Sam Mendes’ American Beauty is still a masterpiece of dramatic filmmaking.

Alan Ball’s screenplay captures the monotony and frustration of suburban life with pitch-black comic wit and sobering honesty that can rarely be found in mainstream Hollywood movies.

7 Worst: Rocky V (1990)

Sylvester Stallone managed to salvage the Rocky franchise with the bittersweet Rocky Balboa and the surprisingly satisfying Creed spin-offs, but he almost killed it for good with Rocky V.

Rocky’s retirement and return to his old Philadelphia neighborhood could’ve brought the series full circle by reprising the working-class spirit of the original 1976 masterpiece, but it lacks the heart and ingenuity that made the original so great.

6 Best: Philadelphia (1993)

The first film from a major Hollywood studio to address the AIDS crisis, Jonathan Demme’s Philadelphia revolves around a gay lawyer who is infected with the virus, gets fired from his firm, and hires a homophobic attorney to represent him in a wrongful dismissal suit.

Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington each give one of the finest performances of their career in the lead roles, while the message was a timely one for the early ‘90s.

5 Worst: Message In A Bottle (1999)

As with most romantic dramas adapted from the works of Nicholas Sparks, Message in a Bottle is a cliché-ridden, by-the-numbers love story that wears out its welcome long before the end credits roll.

Paul Newman steals the spotlight whenever he’s on-screen, but one strong supporting performance isn’t enough to salvage a bad movie.

4 Best: Schindler’s List (1993)

During the lengthy post-production on Jurassic Park, Steven Spielberg decided to work on another movie instead of sitting around and waiting for the visual effects to be completed. So, in his downtime, he made one of the greatest movies of all time out of the story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who used his connections to liberate 1,200 Jewish prisoners from the Nazis’ concentration camps.

Liam Neeson gives a riveting lead performance as Schindler, defining his dramatic acting career before he redefined it 15 years later with an action-driven role in Taken.

3 Worst: Jack (1996)

Francis Ford Coppola directed four of the greatest movies ever made — The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now — so there’s no doubt that he’s a talented filmmaker. However, anyone who only saw Jack would never know his expert skills at the craft.

Robin Williams stars as a 10-year-old boy who ages four times faster than the average person due to a condition called Werner syndrome. The goal was to create an uplifting drama, but the movie’s tone is sickeningly sentimental.

2 Best: The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Frank Darabont’s film adaptation of Stephen King’s prison-set novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption received mixed reviews and bombed at the box office when it was first released. However, it’s since been re-evaluated as a masterpiece. It still holds the top spot on IMDb’s Top 250 list.

Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman develop a heartwarming dynamic as a newly imprisoned inmate who isn’t ready for life on the inside and a veteran prisoner who’s been locked up for so long that it’s more normal to him than the outside world.

1 Worst: Showgirls (1995)

Paul Verhoeven’s erotic drama Showgirls has been re-evaluated as a brilliant satire since it was initially lambasted by contemporary critics, but it’s not a satire; it’s just so agonizingly awful that its serious attempts at drama have been interpreted as satirical.

With a razor-thin story, one-dimensional characters, and enough nudity to push an NC-17 rating, Showgirls is essentially a $45 million adult film.
