Warrior Nun: The Main Characters, Ranked By Likability
Netflix's Warrior Nun is a series that centers around strong and brave women fighting an ancient evil. The Order of the Cruciform Sword was established centuries ago to protect the Halo-bearer, a supernatural warrior with an angel's halo in her back. In order to be a member, one has to give up all their personal interests. By chance, the Halo is given to a dead orphan girl called Ava who didn't sign up for a life of duty and devotion. As she struggles to choose between her freedom and the OCS, the rest of the series' characters are introduced.
Most of the characters belong to the Church and some of them are very hard to stomach. It's the young, passionate girls who make for the most likable characters, which makes this series especially exciting and refreshing to watch. Here's a run down of Warrior Nun's main characters, ranked from least to most likeable.
10 Cardinal Duretti
Cardinal Duretti comes across as the obvious villain who killed Sister Shannon and to some extent, it is justified. He orders Sister Lilith to kill Ava if necessary to bring the Halo back, which is a clear sign that he lacks basic human compassion. He also excommunicates the sisters, which is a cruel thing to do since they have no other family or friends.
By the end of Season 1, it turns out that the Order of the Cruciform has bigger fish to fry than to deal with his papacy. Angel Adriel turns out to be the ultimate villain and Duretti, surprisingly, had nothing to do with it. Hopefully, Duretti will redeem himself in Season 2 and embrace Ava as a legitimate Halo-bearer and help them bring down the evil forces.
9 Mother Superion
Throughout the first season, Mother Superion never smiles or shows affection. Instead, she's always cold, stern and overly-critical. Bitter by Halo's rejection several years ago, she cannot stand Ava and rarely shows her inner struggles. Under the hard surface, Mother Superion deeply cares about the girls and the Order, it's just that she doesn't want to show her vulnerability.
Be that as it may, she always looks like she's in a really bad mood and that gets old pretty fast. She might not be the most likable of the show's characters, but at least her loyalty never shifts.
8 Jillian Salvius
As the main player in the world of science, Jillian Salvius is intelligent, methodological and serious. She has made a great discovery that made the Church's foundations tremble: a portal to another dimension. In order to get ahead in this world, she couldn't concern herself with being liked. Her top priority in life is her son, a mysterious boy that is the main figure of several fan theories for Season 2. Since she only thinks of her child, she tends to forget about being considerate towards others.
When Ava agrees to work with her, Jillian pushes Ava beyond her abilities and causes her great distress by over-using her Halo. At least she apologized and offered the young girl an explanation.
7 JC
JC is Ava's kind, considerate and adventurous love interest. He is one of the first people she meets in her newfound freedom and instantly falls in love with him. He saves her from drowning, gives her shelter in a fancy villa and takes her out clubbing. Rather than prodding her with intrusive questions, he lets her open up to him on her own time. When he witnesses a Tarask attack in Morocco, he runs away and is not seen for the remainder of the season.
The kind of character that is easily forgotten, JC was not complex enough to neither be a fan favorite nor the most disliked character. He is a mediocre character who is easy to like, but hard to get invested in.
6 Ava
The hero of the show, Ava is unfortunately not as likable as she is important. While she gets better as the plot progresses, she is almost intolerable in the beginning. Ignorant, naive, self-centered and loud, Ava acts like an irresponsible fool. One of the things that make no sense about her is her social skills. This girl supposedly lived most of her life in isolation and contemplation, yet acts nothing like it.
At first, audiences could also follow Ava's inner dialogue, which was especially shallow. Luckily, the obsolete inner thoughts were gone in a few episodes. She is often called out by the sisters, especially Beatrice who instantly recognized her ignorance, but appreciated the honesty with which she speaks.
5 Father Vincent
Father Vincent was one of the few Warrior Nun characters who was kind and patient with Ava right from the start. He stood up for her and explained the history of the mysterious Order Ava became a part of against her will. One of the most unexpected turns of Season 1 is the fact that he has been collaborating with mischievous Adriel all along, and is also responsible for Sister Shannon's death.
Who would have thought that Vincent didn't deserve to be liked? It could very well be that he was fooled by Adriel as it is hard to believe that such a wholesome character would be capable of working for the devil.
4 Sister Lilith
Sister Lilith bullied Ava and wanted her head, but she is nonetheless one of the most likable characters in the show. She brings versatility, conflict and darkness to the Order. Even though she is motivated by personal ambitions, she is one of the most devoted and driven sisters of the Order. She is the character that makes things interesting and moving along.
Just like Shotgun Mary, Lilith is the reason Warrior Nun could fall under the action genre. The epic fights are just one of many reasons why this series is worth watching. As was proven by her training with Ava and encounted with Tarask, she is the most fearless warrior of them all. Since she has been abducted by a Tarask, she is also one of the most interesting and unique characters in the series.
3 Sister Camila
There is nothing not to like about this tender, soft-hearted nun who sings Frank Ocean songs. Sister Camila is a pacifist and hates using weapons. Of all the girls, she is the most calm and peaceful. She shouldn't be underestimated due to her kindness, though. Skilled at working with computers, Sister Camila has a very useful skill set that no other nun currently possesses.
Hopefully, this wholesome character will have more screen time in the upcoming seasons. Once she gains more confidence, she will surely become one of the fiercest nuns in the squad.
2 Shotgun Mary
This young lady marches to the beat of her own drum. Shotgun Mary is not even a member of the OCS nor is she a warrior nun. She is a formidable force who confronts her enemies with two shotguns. When communicating, she never beats around the bush. She is also incredibly loyal and protective. She is the only one who seems to have been seriously affected by Sister Shannon's death and saves Ava from vengeful Lilith on several occasions.
Shotgun Mary is among the most likable characters because she is direct, realistic and individualistic. The season finale ends with her going down with demons, but hopefully, the girls will save her from what it now seems a certain death.
1 Sister Beatrice
Of all the sisters, Beatrice is the most likable because she is written as a far more complex character than others. Just like Ava, she has suffered in her life. She is insightful, sensitive and emotionally intelligent. No wonder Ava instantly finds solace in her company. If it wasn't for Beatrice, Ava would have no companion in the OCS.
She calls Ava out and challenges her to grow up in order to fully embrace her duty as the Halo-bearer. It's not only Ava who seems to like her; Sister Camila also sends longing looks her way. Beatrice isn't just kind and intuitive; she proved herself to be one of the best warriors, especially when she deals with a Tarask in ArqTech.
