49ers bring in two former top-five picks to replace Nick Bosa, Solomon Thomas

A pair of top-five picks in the 2013 draft will try to re-spark their careers as the 49ers’ defensive line replacements.

Ziggy Ansah, drafted No. 5 by the Detroit Lions in ’13, and Dion Jordan, the Miami Dolphins’ choice that year at No. 3, have been added to the 49ers’ roster.

They replace Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas, the 49ers’ top draft picks in 2019 (No. 2 overall) and ’17 (No. 3), who each sustained season-ending knee injuries in a three-play span last Sunday when the 49ers went on to beat the host New York Jets.

Ansah and Jordan are both edge rushers, and adding to their need is the uncertain status of Dee Ford, whose back issue prompted him to miss the last game and could keep him out indefinitely. Ansah will wear No. 98, Jordan No. 96.

Jordan was called up from the 49ers’ practice squad. The team is practicing this week at The Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia ahead of Sunday’s return visit to MetLife Stadium, where it will face the New York Giants.

Before playing last season with Seattle, Ansah spent six seasons with the Detroit Lions, where he was tutored by defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, who is in that role with the 49ers. Jordan has played with the Dolphins, Seahawks and Raiders.

Also, the 49ers re-signed Alex Barrett and running back Austin Walter to the practice squad. The 49ers on Tuesday protected rookie rusher JaMycal Hasty from being poached off the practice squad, because they figure to call him up this week to back up Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson, their only healthy running backs after Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman sustained knee sprains Sunday.
