SHOCKED charity shop staff are trying to trace the owner of human ashes donated by mistake.

An assistant found them among boxes left by a retired couple who had cleared out a relative’s house.

The wooden container has a plate with the inscription “Lewis” on its lid.

The ashes were left at the shop in Romsey, Hants, which raises money for children’s hospices Naomi House & Jacksplace.

Wendy Drake, 62, found the box under a pile of other items including antique china.

She said: “I pulled it out and it was wrapped in newspaper and bubble wrap. I thought it might be a jewellery box. I opened the lid and saw it was ashes inside and I closed it straight away.

“The couple said they came from ‘a long way away’ and had cleared up their mother’s house.”

She added that the couple, who left the box two months ago, were believed to have driven a new green Volkswagen.

Keith Wilson, head of marketing at Naomi House & Jacksplace, said: “There must be someone these ashes mean so much to, and we’re desperate to see them returned.”
