Parents of man who went missing 28 years ago hit out over their arrest for his murder
THE parents of a young man who went missing 28 years ago have blasted cops after they were arrested for his murder.
Steven Clark, 23, vanished three days after Christmas in 1992 during a day out with his mum.
Police treated it as missing person’s case but earlier this year a cold case unit decided it was murder – and detectives turned their focus on his elderly parents Charles, 78, and Doris, 81.
They were quizzed on suspicion of his murder as police dug up their garden.
The couple – both former police officers – protested their innocence and following their release on bail they hit out at the ongoing probe.
Speaking to The Sun at the family home in Marske, North Yorkshire, Charles branded the investigation as “scandalous” and a “fishing expedition”.
Doris also criticised the inquiry by Cleveland and North Yorkshire Police cold case unit saying it was “farcical” and adding: “We did not do anything to Steven.”
But detectives stepped up their inquiries yesterday – placing a “digivan” appealing for information near to the couple’s home.
Detective Chief Inspector Shaun Page said: “I’m pleased with the information that we have so far, as we’re building up a picture of what Steven was like and the relationships that he had with those around him.

“The public is key to this case, and by ensuring people living and working in Marske see our appeal through the digivan, we will raise awareness across the whole community.”
A new witness came forward this week to say she had seen Steven alive and well near his home on the afternoon his mum said he vanished while they were on a day trip to near Saltburn.
DCI Page added: “The potential sighting of Steven is absolutely key for the investigation and forms the basis of our appeal on the ground.”
