Fortnite Adds Limited-Time Birthday Challenges Tomorrow

0

Fortnite is adding a set of new limited-time challenges to celebrate its third birthday starting tomorrow. Each year, Epic Games celebrates the anniversary of its immensely popular battle royale’s launch with new cosmetics, in-game events, and makeovers for its iconic Battle Bus.

Some of Fortnite’s birthday surprises leaked early this year. Last week, data miners found files in a recent update for the game that showed two new weapon wraps that will be added for the occasion. They share a teal and pink color scheme, with designs that evoke confetti and birthday cake, though at the time they were leaked, the actual in-game designs weren’t yet finalized.

Despite the leak, some of Fortnite’s birthday festivities remain a mystery. Fortnite’s third birthday challenges are set to be added to the game tomorrow, but the announcement from the Fortnite Twitter account didn’t actually spill the beans on what exactly they’ll entail. It does make clear that players can earn free rewards for participating in Fortnite’s birthday celebration, but those, too, have yet to be revealed. Last week’s leak revealed a couple of likely rewards for the special events, but Epic almost certainly has more party favors it’s waiting to reveal.

Still going strong after three years, Fortnite may be in the most precarious place in its history at the moment, and it has nothing to do with the game itself. Since developer Epic Games launched a legal battle against Apple and Google over microtransaction profit splitting, Fortnite has been kicked off mobile platforms and is facing removal from Mac systems entirely. So far, Epic hasn’t given any sign that it’s getting closer to capitulating to get back in Apple’s good graces, but it’s not clear just how bad the situation could get for Epic if it keeps its lawsuit up.

Epic Games throwing a birthday party for its own game can be seen as more than a little arrogant, but it’s hard to argue that it doesn’t deserve the celebration. Fortnite has maintained a position of prominence in the gaming zeitgeist for three years now, and while it’s not everyone’s game of choice, it’s undeniably one of the most popular games ever made. On top of that, it’s a game that’s continually innovating, growing from just another shooter to a full-blown digital hangout space, complete with live concerts and even political rallies. Plenty of players seem eager to celebrate Fortnite’s success for yet another year, and grab some free loot while they’re at it.
