The Boys: The Disturbing Reason Homelander Faked Crises
Homelander told the general public that superheroes were fighting major world-ending crises, when really they were doing something else.

Superheroes regularly save the day from the biggest Earth-shattering crises. However, in The Boys universe, the heroes said they were saving the world from universe-destroying threats and conflicts when in reality they were participating in something entirely differently: A giant, no-holds-barred orgy - yes, you read that correctly.
Superheroes in The Boys universe aren't the good guys they are in Marvel and DC Comics stories. They don't risk their lives to save the universe like in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Instead, the satirized takes on characters and genre and are more concerned with good PR than they are with actually being heroic. Ultimately, the likes of Homelander, Stormfront, and A-Train aren't good people and have used their powers for evil just as much, if not more, than they have for good. Nothing emphasized just how messed up superhero culture is in The Boys comic universe, when it was revealed the heroes faked multiple crises in order to participate in an annual orgy.
The Boys: Herogasm by Garth Ennis, John McRea, Keith Burns, Simon Bowland, and Tony Avina opens with Homelander addressing the general public in front of the White House. He warns that there is a dire situation, as aliens called Battelite of the Marith'ra have entered the solar system - the same villains the heroes faced in previous crises, the Chaocrisis, and Covert Intrusion. Homelander says that in order to combat the intruders, all superheroes have put aside their differences and will travel to space to save the planet. There's only one problem... Homelander is lying about the situation.

Starlight is shocked to learn that the supes aren't actually going to be fighting in space, as instead, they head to a resort. She asks if the heroes participate in the getaway every time there's a gigantic threat. She's told that the whole thing is a PR stunt that people eat up. Instead of saving the day, the supes participate in a massive, depraved orgy.
If you've ever needed proof that the heroes in The Boys are more about PR than they are actual heroism, look no further than this get-together. Homelander had no problem lying to the world about a universe-ending threat, all so he and other heroes could spend the weekend having sex with each other. It's one of the more disturbing lies that's been told in The Boys universe. It would be surprising if the Amazon series uses the exact same plotline - not that heroes wouldn't lie for good PR, but having a giant superhero orgy seems too messed up, even for the show.
