DuckTales Reportedly Cancelled After Season 3 On Disney XD
Ducktales will reportedly be ending its run on Disney XD after the end of season 3. The show, a revival of the famous 1987 cartoon of the same name, began airing in 2017 to widespread praise. The remake features a star-studded cast that includes David Tennant, Ben Schwarz, and Bobby Moynihan. The show is set to air its presumably final episodes in 2021 to finish its third season.
The original Ducktales series was a massive hit in the late eighties, paving the way for Disney’s modern animated television era. The show’s popularity led to similar series in the late ‘80s and 1990s, like TaleSpin, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, and direct spinoff Darkwing Duck (a character who also returns in the 22017 series). Both the original and reboot follow wealthy curmudgeon Scrooge McDuck and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie as they engage in various adventures in and around the city of Duckburg.
Now, it looks like the latter Ducktales will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps and conclude after a three-year tenure. According to Collider, the show’s production team was informed of its ending as early as last September, though that doesn’t mean the show was necessarily “canceled.” The same report suggests Ducktales will be sent off with a proper finale by the time the last episodes of season 3 air next year, hopefully satisfying fans sad to see it go. The series will likely continue rerunning on Disney XD or the Disney Channel (having appeared on both before) for the foreseeable future.
While the end of such a quality series is disappointing for those who’ve held it close, there’s a lot to celebrate in Ducktales’ brief run. Its excellence in writing and animation helped spark a broader resurgence in old cartoons, as seen in Hulu’s Animaniacs and HBO Max’s Looney Tunes Cartoons. It’s also been reported recently that a new Darkwing Duck series is in the works for Disney+, meaning one of the most popular characters could be continuing in a new direction.
Given Disney’s increased focus on Disney+ as their primary content platform, it doesn’t seem absurd to think that other beloved properties could reappear in one form or another going forward. Whether those stories take place in Duckburg or elsewhere, there’s plenty of classic content to pull from now that the interest is there. The final episodes of Ducktales are set to premiere next year on Disney XD.
