Screen Junkies has gone holiday-themed with their latest honest trailer, taking on perennial December favorite A Christmas Story. Released in 1983 and directed by Bob Clark, A Christmas Story tells a series of vignettes from when protagonist Ralphie, whose adult self narrates the movie, was nine years old. Running through all these stories is Ralphie's overwhelming desire to receive one specific gift for Christmas: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. Clark's movie rose quickly to classic status for American audiences, with a Christmas-Eve-to-Christmas-Day marathon playing on either TNT or TBS every year since 1997.
Fitting for a movie about an obsession with an air rifle, the Screen Junkiesteam comes out guns blazing, wondering from the get-go if people only like it because they already have every line memorized. They sprinkle in a few meta-jokes about the people who made it to go with their breakdown of the movie itself, which they point out has a lot more misery in it than you'd expect from something so nostalgic. You can watch the video below:
This honest trailer is not one of those where they make jokes while actually heaping praise, and unabashed fans of A Christmas Story might come away from it feeling like they're the ones Scut Farkas showed up to bully. While poking fun at its conservative fixation with firearms, they point out the movie isn't really about Christmas or its values and bring up a moment of Asian stereotyping that you can't help but cringe at. They characterize the enduring love for the movie as the result of familiarity, and their not-so-subtle message for viewers is that they should really just watch Elf instead. Still, they go over all of A Christmas Story's most beloved moments and even build in a solid cameo, so even if their take on the movie's popularity is correct, fans should get enough of a kick out of revisiting its greatest hits to make this video worth their time.
