Super Mario All-Stars Joins Tetris 99 For Maximus Cup This Week
The 18th Tetris 99 Maximus Cup is here and it is teaming up with Super Mario All-Stars to give players some extra nostalgia – provided they are old enough to remember the Mario games originally made for the NES and the remade collection for the SNES. However, the early Mario games have that special something, just like modern Mario games, that makes them easy to get into and fall in love with, so even younger players are sure to enjoy this mash-up.
Tetris 99 is a product of today's trends, where battle royales rule the multiplayer genre. Tetris, as not one of the most complex games out there, has been turned into a multiplayer battle royale, where players need to clear rows of Tetriminos (yes, the blocks have a name) as fast as possible to be the last player standing of 99 players. There is actually quite a bit of strategy involved to win, as one can sabotage other player's boards. Some may think that the battle royale trend has gone too far with Tetris 99, but it works surprisingly well as a multiplayer game and is one of the best Tetris titles out there.
The Tetris 99 Maximus Cup event will run from December 3rd to 7th, according to the Tetris website, and can be played on the Nintendo Switch. Players will need a Nintendo Switch Online membership, and then just need to play Tetris 99 in online mode during the event to participate. Players can earn an in-game theme based on Super Mario All-Stars, which is a game included in the SNES Nintendo Switch Online's library. To get this theme, they must win event points based on where they place in each match. Once players have 100 points, the theme will unlock, giving players background art, music and Tetrimino designs inspired by Super Mario All-Stars. Nintendo Of America tweeted a sneak peek of the theme, and it is very true to Mario games, even featuring a little Mario sprite on the side to spur players along.
The Super Mario All-Stars collection is made up of 4 Mario games originally from the NES and Family Computer Disc System. This includes Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3. These old games have become a beacon in many adult players' childhoods to such an extent that a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 was sold at an auction for the highest amount a video game has ever been sold for, breaking a world record.
There is no doubt that many players will want to earn the Super Mario All-Stars theme for their Tetris game on the Switch. Tetris 99 works well as a multiplayer game, and an event like this is a fun idea from Nintendo, where they get to fuse two of their most well-known franchises together that is expected to gather many nostalgic fans in an all-out battle for the Cup.
Tetris 99 is available only on Nintendo Switch.
