Another 616 people die with Covid in UK on day vaccine is rolled out
Another 616 people have died with coronavirus in the UK bringing the official death toll to 62,033.
A total of 12, 282 people tested positive in the last 24 hours, according to the latest figures by the Department for Health. This means 1,750,242 people have now been infected since the pandemic started.
For comparison, 603 people died while 13,430 positive cases were recorded last Tuesday.
Yesterday, 14,718 positive cases were recorded and the virus claimed the lives of 189 people. However, figures are often lower at the weekend due to reporting delays.
The Government’s figures cover deaths in all settings including care homes and the wider community.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) today revealed Covid-19 deaths in England and Wales have reached their highest weekly figures since May – jumping 13% in just seven days.
In the week ending November 27, England and Wales recorded 3,040 fatalities with Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
This was up from 2,697 the previous week and was the highest total since the seven days ending May 15.
The latest figures come on the day the NHS began rolling out its biggest mass vaccination programme in history, after Britain’s health watchdog approved Pfizer/BioNTech’s vaccine last week.
