Oddworld: Soulstorm Release Date Pushed Back To Spring 2021

0

Oddworld: Soulstorm has officially been pushed back to being released in Spring 2021, according to a the game's Game Awards 2020 trailer that was released for the game, along with a note posted by the game developers. The game, which has been in development for quite some time now, reemerged back to the world in June of 2020 when a PS5 trailer was released. But now, it looks like it will be coming out next year.

The last time that Oddworld was talked about, the creators said that it was to be released earlier on in 2020, but obviously, that time has passed. It was only a matter of time before a new release date was announced. The previous game in the Oddworld series - Oddworld New ‘N’ Tasty - came out in 2014, and this game looked to continue on from the story. The game was originally supposed to come out in 2017 but has been pushed back multiple times. As such, this was not a big surprise for players who have wanted to experience the game for some time.

But, it seems fans of the series will have to wait longer for the continuation. Oddworld Inhabitants co-founder and president, Lorne Lanning, wrote in a note posted to Twitter explaining the delay. He says that the stories and levels are done, and the team is now working on balancing features and squashing bugs, which is a standard procedure to make sure every game works its best when released. He also said that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been harder to turn out what they need when the company, as an indie team, isn’t able to meet regularly and has to work from home. So they are taking the “extra time” that they need to make sure the game is perfect. He also said that in early 2021, a “more exact date” will be announced.

The trailer, which was recently featured at The Game Awards by PlayStation on Oddworld Inhabitants' behalf, had a message from Lanning himself afterward, talking directly to the audience about why they were pushing back the date. Oddworld games have historically been incredibly ambitious for the times in terms of scope, so a few more months is a drop in the bucket compared to the three-year extended wait fans have endured thus far.

The game is a planned quintology, so there is still going to be plenty of games to play once this game is released years down the line. The game, like its predecessors, will include plenty of puzzle-solving and enhanced visuals like the recent remake of the original, while introducing all-new mechanics, like an inventory, looting, crafting, and the ability to fight back against enemies.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is in development to be released on PS, PS4, and PS5.
