Pretty Little Liars: Each Main Character's First And Last Line In The Series
The core characters of the constant-cliffhanger Freeform show, Pretty Little Liars, grew and changed over the seven-season timeframe. Although the girls allowed themselves to be subjected to Alison's reign of terror when they were teens, they eventually became strong, independent women. However, even when it ended, fans kept the show alive and well years later through memes and streaming reruns.
The characters were obviously not the same high schoolers bottling up their dangerous secrets anymore. Their growth became much clearer in between each person's very first line that viewers heard up until the very last lines spoken on the show.
10 Hanna
First: "Ali, did you download the new Beyonce?"
Most loyal PLL fans think of Hanna's main introductory scene in the mall with Mona, slyly stealing those designer sunglasses, but her actual first line was in the flashback barn scene the night that Ali went missing. Her first line is one of many that is similar to the other liars, and that would be the constant search for Ali's appreciation and respect. Unfortunately, sassy and tough Hanna didn't get a break when teenage Ali weight-shamed her, calling her "Hefty Hanna."
Last: "Oh, and don't forget to take pictures of your hotel room before you've messed up all your stuff."
Hanna's last line though emphasizes her intact fun and sass-filled personality as she talked to Aria when she was leaving for her honeymoon. What fans love about Hanna is that through all of her past personal struggles, she still persevered with that tough-as-nails mindset and comical responses.
9 Emily
First: "I'm loving her new video!"
Perhaps the one with the most inner strength and generosity, Emily's first line in the flashback barn scene was directed towards Ali. Of course, Ali decided to taunt Emily about her sexuality. While Emily's wanted to impress Ali like the rest of their friends, it did become clear that she just wanted Ali to notice her in a romantic way too.
Last: "You're gonna send us a ton of photos, right?"
As for Emily's very last line in season 7, her question was in support of Aria and her upcoming honeymoon trip, clarifying just how invested she was in her friends' lives.
8 Spencer
First: "Careful, Aria. Drink too much and you'll tell us all your secrets."
Spencer was always the active leader, even with the actual dubbed leader (Ali) in the room near her. Her playful joke to Aria is where her inner boss lies, but not in the stereotypical way that a "bossy" person is described as. Spencer was never a boss or a cliquey ring leader.
Last: "There's this new group chat app that we should all be on, I'll text it to you."
In fact, she was rather the sweet organizer of the group, one that ended the show with a sincere command to stay connected with the girls through a new app. Even in a heavy setting, just like when the girls were standing in a circle crying those happy tears, Spencer would always attempt to lighten the mood.
7 Aria
First: "Whoa, what happened? Something's out there!"
Aria's very first line exemplifies what the girls heard that fateful night when Ali went missing, which was a loud noise in the midst of the lightning storm conveniently happening outside. Aria was the cue for the girls to approach the barn door, only to then see Ali jokingly scare them.
Last: "You guys, I'm leaving for 3 weeks, why is everybody crying?"
Aria's last line though was the innocent question that defended both the characters and the actresses' reactions to the friend group's departure. Her last line showed her starting her new life with the man she had been in love with since she was 16, and that was, of course, Ezra Fitz.
6 Alison
First: "Maybe a little too much 'Em?"
Oh, Ali, the one with the rudest comments when she was younger. Alison's first real line was a jab at Emily, who simply complimented Beyonce's music video all to be in agreement with the other girls. Ali, though, took advantage of Emily's words and taunted her about her sexuality.
Last: "For some reason, this feels like it's the end of something."
Although everyone knew her as Rosewood's mean girl, Alison grew up into a much more respectful and stronger person, which is clear in her last line. Ali's last words were actually the show's last as well, marking the official finale of the 7-year television drama.
5 Mona
First: "Hey, is this me?"
Mona's character was a true rollercoaster as viewers and the characters could never really grasp whose side she was truly on. She started out as one of the town's "it" girls, shopping alongside the other "it" girl, Hanna. Mona's friendship with Hanna would continue to influence her path to maturing into the clever and loyal woman she became.
Last: "Teatime for you girl."
That last line of hers looks confusing unless PLL fans know who Mona was talking to. While setting up her little dollhouse, living a chic new life in France, Mona was facing Alex and Mary Drake with her dolls matching the two troublemakers. Mona poured the fake tea for the little dolls signifying what Alex and Mary were then a part of, which was Mona's dollhouse now.
4 Caleb
First: "Why do you care?"
This boy turned into the enigmatic yet lovable man fans would know and love forever. Caleb's first line matched the bad boy that he was at first when he moved to Rosewood. He had no problem speaking his mind, even in cutting responses like this one. Obviously, when he later fell for Hanna, the more emotional side of him emerged, leading into all the in-between years before the very last line he spoke on the show.
Last: "Wanna make a baby?"
Asking Hanna to start a family indicated Caleb's change of character since he met her. His last full line on the show was after these two kept disagreeing and constantly shot disapproving glances and remarks at each other in the finale, worrying all "Haleb" fans. It was a good thing that Caleb asked Hanna if she wanted to have a child together.
3 Toby
First: "Lucky you."
Toby's growth was probably one of the most apparent out of them all. From the shy, mysterious, and even intimidating high school boy to the confident police officer, Toby's first line showed his angst towards the entire town of Rosewood, but more specifically, the liars. Toby's entire personal life was misshapen by Jenna and the initial controlling aura she had on him, in addition to the bullying Alison was responsible for.
Last: "Tell me your favorite poem from the book you gave me."
Yet, Toby's perseverance led him to build a relationship with Spencer, befriend the other little liars, and become an officer for the town of Rosewood. His last line was in the moment when it was all on him to decipher who, out of the twin women, was Spencer and who was Alex Drake, or "A." This line was his steadfast interrogation aimed at Alex to show her that he could tell which one was really Spencer.
2 Paige
First: "This is a practice, not a meet."
Emily's main girlfriend throughout the show (aside from her eventual relationship with Ali) started out as a tormenter to Emily over her sexuality. Paige tried to mask her own feelings for Emily by bullying her in swim practice, outwardly deriding the fact that Emily was gay. While fans later discovered that Paige actually developed romantic feelings for Emily, her first line in the show conveyed her competitive nature.
Last: "You're gonna have a beautiful baby."
Paige's last line was a statement of closure, leaving Alison's home knowing that she actually loved Emily. Paige was therefore accepting of their eventual relationship, knowing that Emily would be alright.
1 Ezra
First: "You alright down there?"
Mr. Fitz, the handsome English teacher that began his career at Rosewood High with a bit of trouble after he fell for one of his students. Ezra's first line was towards the love of his life, and his last line was for her too. Asking the girl sitting a few chairs down from him if she was "alright" seemed like just a way to strike up a conversation with her, and he was clearly successful.
Last: "Till death do us part."
Not only saying "I do" to Aria but also promising that he would be with her "till death do us part" was the perfect final line for him, after all of what they had been through together. His last words on the show sealed the relationship he would always have with Aria and also his role in the show, as the intelligent, book-smart yet strong person he was.
