You Go Through Fire For Coaches Like Jose Mourinho – Ex-Tottenham Star

The 33-year-old defender played only 21 games for Mourinho last season before leaving Tottenham to join Benfica after his contract in north London expired.

However, despite spending just under a year under the Portuguese tactician, Vertonghen was largely impressed with the Spurs head coach.

The Belgium international declared that he would go through fire for coaches like Mourinho, as well as his national team boss Roberto Martinez.

Expressing his admiration for Mourinho, Vertonghen pointed out how the 57-year-old is usually close to his players and is there for them when they fight for him.

“He was fantastic, as well as Martinez. You go through fire for such coaches“, Vertonghen told Belgian broadcaster Sporza.

“Mourinho is, of course, an outspoken figure, both in a positive and negative sense.

“If you win, you can ask him anything.

“If you lose, then you have to sit down.

“He is super close to his players, they are actually his soldiers.

“He can really rise above it and make you feel very small.

“But if you win and fight for him, then he is really there for you.“

Mourinho is currently in his first full season as the head coach of Tottenham and has taken them to the top of the league table.
