Mourinho responds to question whether Spurs need to be more proactive than reactive
Jose Mourinho admitted that his Spurs side started the game poorly today against Leicester City, with the Foxes winning 2-0 come the final whistle.
Brendan Rodgers’ men fought for every ball in the opening exchanges while Spurs seemed to shy away, unable to retain possession or create chances.
Jamie Vardy eventually put his side 1-0 up on the stroke of half time when Serge Aurier brought down Fofana in the box. The same man then forced a second goal for Leicester in the second 45 when his header deflected in off Toby Alderweireld.
One journalist asked Jose Mourinho in his post-match press conference whether Spurs need to be more proactive than reactive in future.
The Spurs head coach claimed that his players did not start well, but not because he told them not to be proactive.
Tottenham have now dropped eight points from the last available nine against Leicester, Liverpool, and Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Mourinho said (Football London): “But the fact that we didn’t start well isn’t because I told the players not to start well.
“Don’t get me wrong, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t tell any player ‘don’t be proactive’ or ‘be reactive’.
“But I admit we did start bad, yeah, we did start bad.”
On making chances in the second half, he added: “Well, they didn’t trouble us too. They scored off Toby [Alderweireld] an own goal and I don’t remember anything else.
“I remember Schmeichel making a phenomenal save with Sonny on the far post and us being dominant and trying.
“I agree with you, we didn’t create 15 chances in the second half.
“But they’re a good team, they know how to defend, drop the lines back and they created difficulties with their defensive organisation.”
