Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Star Explains Why A Riverdale Crossover Is Needed
Kiernan Shipka, star of Netflix’s popular Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, agrees with many fans that her show needs a proper crossover with Riverdale. Netflix announced earlier this year that Sabrina would be ending after the premiere of its fourth season, much to the disappointment of the show’s loyal fans. Season 4 is set to begin streaming on Netflix on December 31st.
Both beloved teen dramas are based on classic Archie Comics series, and both were created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Initially, Sabrina was even planned as a direct spinoff of Riverdale for The CW. Those plans changed, though, eventually leading the teenage witch to a Netflix exclusive debut and a completely independent story from Riverdale. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from crossing their fingers in hopes that the two series might one day collide. Sabrina’s impending conclusion makes that seem even less likely than before, but as long as Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina remain under the same creative and distributive umbrellas, it’s certainly possible.
Apparently, Sabrina Spellman herself supports a Riverdale crossover. Per CBR, Kiernan Shipka discussed the possibility of the two shows overlapping in a recent roundtable interview.
"Honestly, I just think Riverdale could use a witch. They're going through a ton of stuff and they need some celestial whatever kind of vibes! They need a bit of extra power, they need someone who knows reincarnation, necromancy. They need that in their world and, I don't know, I just think it would be a fun world if the two collided at some point."
Officially introducing magic, witches, and Satan to the world of Riverdale would certainly be a bit of a jump, but it also wouldn’t be so far off from all the wild, cultish, murderous plotlines the show has seen thus far. The town of Riverdale has appeared on Chilling Adventurers of Sabrina previously, and a proper overlap of the two series would honestly make a lot of things in Riverdale make a lot more sense.
Unfortunately for both Shipka and the fans, a crossover at this stage seems highly unlikely. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be over soon, and Riverdale’s impending time jump could be setting up a relatively fresh start for the show. Anything is possible with Aguirre-Sacasa at the helm, but it seems more likely that the two will remain connected only by loose references and some fun Easter eggs for dedicated viewers. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will return to Netflix for its fourth and final season on December 31, 2020.
