Ex-Giants scouting director Matt Nerland, a key to World Series teams, dies

Matt Nerland, who began a 31-year Giants career as an intern in 1989, then rose to scouting director under then-general manager Brian Sabean, died over the weekend. He was 53 and had liver disease.
