This week the crew at Team Meat released Super Meat Boy Forever; in the hours leading up to launch, franchise co-creator Tommy Refenes thanked fans for their ongoing support in a heartfelt message. The sequel hit Nintendo Switch and PC via the Epic Games Store yesterday, ending the decade-long wait for a proper follow-up.
Interestingly, Super Meat Boy Forever wasn't always meant to take on the form of a sequel to the hit 2010 platformer. Team Meat instead began the project with the intention of crafting a mobile-only auto-runner. Evidently, those particular plans changed, morphed into something on a far grander scale. Fans can now explore Super Meat Boy Forever for themselves, embarking on a new adventure filled with new characters and a host of surprises.
Hours ahead of Super Meat Boy Forever's launch on Switch and PC, series co-creator Tommy Refenes shared a message on the official Twitter page for Team Meat. The note begins by telling fans that only good news features in said message. Refenes then goes on to joke about CD Projekt RED's now-infamous messages that boast black text over a bright yellow background. Mostly, the game designer speaks of his excitement that fans can finally enjoy the sequel, which introduces a few new characters, extra worlds, "a ridiculous amount of levels, and lots of surprises." He also writes of the immense pride he feels in his team, before thanking Epic Games and Nintendo for their support. Refenes ends the message by thanking fans for their patience and for remaining invested in Super Meat Boy for the last decade.
As Refenes notes in his above post, the follow-up to Super Meat Boy has been nothing if not a long time coming. Work on the original plans for Super Meat Boy Forever initially began back in 2014, with Refenes working alongside fellow Team Meat co-founder, Edmund McMillen. Once the latter exited the project, Refenes began anew in 2017. The fruits of his labor and that of others is now available on Switch and the Epic Games Store.
What the developers at Team Meat will cook up next, of course, remains to be seen. But it seems as though fans have plenty of content in Super Meat Boy Forever to occupy them for quite a while.
Super Meat Boy Forever is out now on Nintendo Switch and PC via the Epic Games Store; meanwhile, PS4, Steam, and Xbox One versions are on track to release sometime in 2021.
