Super Smash Bros. Dark Reunion Tournament Starts On Christmas Day

0

The next tourney event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be debuting on Christmas Day and will be focused on characters that are dark in nature. This tourney will commemorate the recent release of Sephiroth in the game.

It’s not often that Super Smash Bros. adds villain characters into the roster, but when it happens it’s celebrated. Ridley was one of the most requested fighters ever since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so when he was announced as a newcomer to the series at E3 2018, the reaction was big. The reaction levels were similar when Sephiroth, one of gaming’s most iconic villains, got added as the third DLC fighter for the second Fighters Pass.

But villains aren’t the only character in the spotlight of the tourney dubbed “Dark Reunion.” Any sort of character that uses dark energy qualifies, which is why characters like Joker and Bayonetta are shown. But even some that don’t use that energy, like Wolf and Meta Knight, are also included. It’s unknown if literal Dark-types like Greninja and Incineroar will be included though. Regardless, the tourney will only allow for those characters to be playable, and Sephiroth is featured at the forefront of the cover. The tourney will last for three days from Christmas day onwards.

While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is continuing to have its in-game tourneys, organized competitive tournaments have been fighting an uphill battle. The FreeMelee movement was started after Nintendo shut down a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament that used a modded copy of the game. Most recently, Nintendo has shut down a collegiate esports tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though PlayVS has since made a statement on the matter. Nintendo has also shut down a livestream of a Splatoon 2 tournament due to some players supporting the FreeMelee movement.

While the fan competitive scene is in a rough spot, for better or worse, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is at least trying to have some kind of in-game tourney. A celebration revolving around villains is well earned, as there are a variety of villain newcomers that have made their way into the latest edition of Super Smash Bros. Ridley, King K. Rool, Dark Samus and now Sephiroth proudly take up the villain slots of Ultimate, and their popularity shows that fans like seeing villains as playable characters. This tourney featuring villains and other dark characters will likely reinforce the fact that some of the most beloved characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are those with the darkness inside of them.
