KABUL, Afghanistan – The US Department of State Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs on Wednesday condemned the “barbaric and senseless assassination” of Yousuf Rasheed, saying the future of Afghanistan cannot be “foreclosed by murder”.
Yousuf Rasheed, CEO of the Free and Fair Election Forum of Afghanistan (FEFA), was killed by unknown gunmen in Kabul city on Wednesday morning, suspects at large.
“We join the Afghan people in condemning this barbaric and senseless assassination of Yousuf Rasheed, who was a tireless advocate for democracy,” said the Bureau in a tweet. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
“The United States has repeatedly made clear that our vision for peace is of a sovereign, unified, and democratic Afghanistan,” the tweet added. “Yousuf Rasheed was a courageous advocate for that vision. His voice will not be silenced.”
Meanwhile, Chargé d’Affaires to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ross Wilson said Rasheed worked “tirelessly” to ensure free and transparent election, calling his death “a loss for his family, friends and nation”.
“Yousuf Rasheed was a dedicated & steadfast advocate for representative democracy in Afghanistan,” he said in a tweet. “He worked tirelessly for years to ensure free & transparent elections that engaged all Afghans. His death is a loss for his family, friends & nation.”
On Wednesday, Yousuf Rasheed was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Tani Kot area of PD7 in Kabul city.
