Emma Stone recalls a delightfully awkward moment between her mom and Angelina Jolie. Stone will next be seen in Cruella, but she got her big break for starring as Olive Penderghast in Easy A. Released in 2010, and directed by Will Gluck, the comedy chronicled how Olive’s life spiraled out of control after one simple lie.
Easy A was a plum part for Stone, allowing her to display the impressive range which would go on to garner praise in other projects. At the start of the movie, Olive is relatively light on her feet and relaxed. As the story evolves however, so does its protagonist. At turns utterly confident and completely devastated, Stone received rave reviews for how she led the film. She also garnered a Golden Globe nomination, which was her first, and decided to bring her mother along for the 2011 ceremony.
In a recent interview on The Tonight Show, Stone told Jimmy Fallon about the awkwardness that ensued when she brought her mother along with her to the Golden Globes. Sitting next to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Stone’s mom couldn’t resist the urge for some polite small talk. Albeit, as Stone herself notes, the choice of topic might’ve been a little weird. Her quote has been included below.
“We went to the Golden Globes. It was very, very, very exciting. So, I took my mom with me. We sat next to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. We were like, ‘Of all people to be sitting next to at that kind of a show, whoa.’ And my mom never drinks but she had champagne that night, which was, probably not the best idea, but she was having a wonderful time. She started asking Angelina Jolie like, ‘Do you have kids?’ I was like, ‘You have got to be out of your [mind].’ She completely knew! But she was like making small talk, ‘How old are they? What are their names?’ Knew everything, but they were so nice.”

The story is hilarious to think about. Commonly known as Brangelina, news about Jolie and Pitt’s personal lives had become largely inescapable since the two actors collaborated on Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Most anyone would have at least passing knowledge of the duo’s family unit, regardless of whether they actively sought out the information, as Stone correctly points out to Fallon while recalling the story. The best part of it, probably, is imagining Stone as she sits there with a rictus grin and uneasily attempts to move the conversation forward. Still, there’s also something sweet and worthwhile about the attempts to relate to the superstar couple on a level which goes beyond their celebrity.
In another sense, there is a bittersweet aspect to Stone’s recollections. The actress has an Academy Award to her name, resulting from her lead role in La La Land. To critics and audiences, she’s widely regarded as a versatile performer capable of comedic and dramatic performances. While she still might get nervous sitting at an awards show tables, it’s not quite the same as the feeling of being an outsider looking in. Stone was already shedding that outsider status by the time Easy A rolled around, a process which was propelled by her stellar performance in the film. It’s far more likely now that Stone has to endure a bit of awkward small talk. But, given her own experiences, she’ll probably handle it as nicely as Brangelina did.
