The Vampire Diaries: 5 Characters Who Would Make The Best Boyfriends (& The 5 Worst)
Falling in love and having a relationship in which both parties are happy is never easy - even more so in fantasy stories where the characters have to deal not only with relationship drama, but also supernatural problems. The show The Vampire Diaries isn't an exception to this rule.
The show's main and supporting characters are mostly busy dealing with various threats that come into their lives. Despite that, they still find some time to build romantic relationships, and build quite a few of them at that. But not all of The Vampire Diaries guys would good boyfriends, in fact, some of them would be rather bad romantic options.
10 Best: Elijah
Elijah Mikaelson was the kindest of all the Originals. He treated even humans, which vampires usually consider inferior, with respect. He respected Elena once he got to know her a little bit better, and helped her several times. He even tried to save Katherine's life and later gave her another chance - but she betrayed him.
Elijah was kind and loyal to the people he cared about, so it's safe to assume he would do everything for the person he loves.
9 Worst: Klaus
Klaus has a lot of positive sides to him - he's charming, intelligent, has a sense of humor, and has a sensitive artistic side. But he's also violent and unpredictable. Klaus is naturally paranoid, suspicious of other people around him, and he's prone to quickly think they betrayed him. His violent outbursts also don't help things in the slightest.
In other words, despite all of his good character traits, Klaus would be dangerous to have around for a longer period of time - since it would also be only a matter of time before he would snap and do something bad.
8 Best: Matt
Unlike the majority of the guys in the series, Matt never became more than a human - which was good for him, in the end. Matt grew up in difficult circumstances but he didn't let his family situation bring him down and he worked hard to make something of himself.
He's loyal to his friends, kind, and is there to support them when they need him. All of this would also help him to be a good boyfriend. Maybe he's not as exciting as vampires and werewolves, but a lot of people value stability over excitement.
7 Worst: Damon
This might be a controversial point for a lot of the show's fans - but Damon wasn't that good at romantic relationships, at least during the show's duration. It's possible he changed once he transformed back into a human.
However, Damon as a vampire had the tendency to get fixated on people he loved, and when they didn't react the way he wanted them to, he lashed out. Someone who snapped Jeremy's neck just because Elena didn't return his feelings isn't really boyfriend material.
6 Best: Stefan
Stefan's ability to be a good boyfriend depends greatly on whether he has his emotions off or on. When he has them off, he changes into the bloodthirsty ripper. But when he has his emotions on, Stefan is usually sensitive and attentive to his partner.
He accepted Elena's decision when she chose Damon, even though Damon would have lashed out had the situation been reversed. Stefan also wasn't as fixated on one or two people as Damon was, and when Elena left him, he was able to build a new functioning relationship with Caroline.
5 Worst: Tyler
Tyler was never a very sympathetic character, and that also held true in romantic relationships. He acted like he was ashamed of Vicki when they were dating, and was afraid to stand up to his parents when Vicki confronted him about him.
Tyler also later gave up on his relationship with Caroline because he was too consumed with his rage and desire to find Klaus and kill him. There's also the fact that he often acted before thinking, which would only cause trouble for his potential partner.
4 Best: Alaric
Alaric gets extra points for trying his hardest to be a good dad to his daughters on Legacies, but he didn't have much luck in the romance department during his time in Mystic Falls.
His girlfriend Jenna died, Jo died during their wedding, and let's not even mention the unfortunate romance with Caroline. However, all in all, Alaric has enough good character traits to be a good partner as well, if fate is at his side - he's smart, kind, and puts in the effort when he's in a relationship.
3 Worst: Jeremy
Just like other characters, it's possible that Jeremy changed later, became more open toward people, and also had better luck at romances.
But while he was in the show, Jeremy seemed to have been a magnet for bad luck. All of his girlfriends died at one point or another, some of them permanently. So anybody who would want to be his girlfriend would have to be very brave. Jeremy also later became consumed with killing vampires, which meant he paid even less attention to his personal life.
2 Best: Enzo
Enzo had a lot of darker moments on the show, but to be fair to him, so did the other characters. Enzo started out as a mysterious character, one who balanced on the line between good and bad.
In the end, he joined the heroes, and by the time he died, he was a 100% good guy. Enzo had a wicked sense of humor, was smart, and attentive to Bonnie when they were together. And unlike his friend Damon, he mostly had better control over his emotions.
1 Worst: John Gilbert
John may have had his daughter's best interests at heart, but otherwise, he wasn't a very good person. He hated vampires and was hellbent on killing as many of them as he could. For example, he was responsible for Anna's death even though she was one of the most sympathetic characters on the show.
John's secretive nature and his life mission would make any relationship with him overly difficult and not worth the effort.
