The Expanse: Avasarala's Big Decision Could Prove To Be Fatal
The latest issue of The Expanse will center around a choice that fan-favorite character Avasarala must make and how it could potentially destroy lives. From Boom! Studios, The Expanse #2 is the second installment of a four-part series helmed by writer Corinna Bechko and artist Alejandro Aragon. The Expanse comic series is an expansion of Amazon's sci-fi television show and takes place between season four and five. The first issue was released in December and the next issue is set to hit comic book stores on January 20th, 2021.
At its core, The Expanse tells the story of a group of collective anti-heroes who operate in a world set in the near-distant future where human beings have colonized the entire solar system. The series follows Chrisjen Avasarala, the Secretary-General of the United Nations who loses her position at the end of season four of the television show and is now exiled to the way station Luna. This is exactly where the comic series picks up. In The Expanse: #1, Avasarala has connected with renegade weapons connoisseur Bobbi Draper and the pair have begun working together. Through their work, Avasarala has sniffed out a potential opportunity to regain her political status by diving head-first into a shady operation involving an intergalactic black market weapons ring. While the details of their working relationship isn't fully explained, Avasarala has realized that there is something in this newfound relationship worth exploring.
According to AIPT, the second issue picks right up where we left off and raises the stakes. She is offered a chance to reclaim her political power by the cabal behind the black market of Martian weapons. "Trapped between a return to glory and a chance to do the right thing, Avasarala’s ultimate decision will lead to fatal consequences," the site reads. It also seems like in this issue Avasarala continues to strike a balance between forging ahead on winning her career back and finding time to improve an already strained relationship between her and her daughter.
Much of this comic spinoff deals with Avasarala and her complex relationships to those around her. This includes an exploration of her and Bobbi's relationship as the two possibly spiral into vigilantehood, as well as the tumultuous relationship between Avasarala and her daughter. But it is these morally-gray relationships that make this series so interesting.
From dealing with political turmoil, a rocky marriage, and her near-constant battle for peace, Avasarala has always been a fighter and is never one to shy away from tough choices. But with the slow and steady tension buildup of her turbulent relationship with her daughter, it seems like this big decision may lead to bigger rifts between her and her family: a rift she can't afford. Time will surely tell what surprises Bechko has in store for Avasarala and the rest of the crew when The Expanse #2 hits stores in January.
