How to find your NHS number
NHS staff continue to perform miracles during the pandemic, despite some hospitals being overwhelmed by the increasing number of coronavirus admissions.
A new mass testing scheme is being rolled out this week while seven mass vaccination centres have been opened in England in a bid to control the virus.
Patients under the care of the NHS will all have an NHS number – a 10-digit number, like 382 563 3456.
Your NHS number is unique to you and helps healthcare staff and service providers identify you correctly and match your details to your health records.
How can I find out my NHS Number?
You should be able to find your NHS Number on any letter or document you have received from the NHS, including prescriptions, test results, and hospital referral or appointment letters.
Don’t worry if you cannot locate your NHS Number at home though as, you can ask your GP practice to help you.
They should be able to provide the number for you as long as you are registered with them.
However, to protect your privacy, you may be asked to show a passport, driving licence or some other proof of identity.
Do you need your NHS number for a Covid vaccine?
You are able to book your coronavirus vaccine online using the NHS service if you have received a letter inviting you to book your vaccination appointments.
The vaccination is currently being offered to people aged 80 or over.
At the start of the booking process you are asked to provide your 10 digit NHS number.
However, if you do not know your NHS number you can still book an appointment.
Details of booking a vaccination can be found on the NHS website.
