Star Wars: 10 Silliest Quotes In The Movies, Ranked | ScreenRant

0

The Star Wars movies boast some of the catchiest dialog in cinema history. With scripts penned by critically acclaimed novelists and screenwriters like Lawrence Kasdan, Leigh Brackett (who cut their teeth on film-noir and pulp serials) and yes, even George Lucas, it's no wonder moviegoers who haven't seen a single Star Wars movie can quote it. Despite the franchise's enduring popularity, there are plenty of ridiculous lines of dialog throughout the movies, from George Lucas's Prequel Trilogy to Disney's Sequel Trilogy.

Whether the lines don't make sense, are too heavy on jargon, or just use humor that falls flat, they pull audiences out of the galaxy far, far away. Fans can accept wizards with laser swords, provided that their alien friends don't say, "Exqueeze me".

10 "Careful you do not choke on your aspirations."

When Orson Krennic was feeling underappreciated for his work on the Death Star, he went to the Emperor's right hand in the hopes of bypassing Grand Moff Tarkin and securing favor. Darth Vader was perhaps the most chilling he had ever been in Rogue One: A Star Wars Storybut one line also gave him an unexpected degree of humor.

After Krennic tried to appeal to Vader's sense of decency, the Dark Lord of the Sith ensnared him in a Force choke for his delusions of grandeur, warning him not to "choke" on his "aspirations". The line was a little heavier handed for Vader, who ordinarily had a very dry sense of humor ("Apology accepted, Captain Needa"), making the Sith Lord much cheekier than in previous incarnations.

9 "Around the survivors, a perimeter create."

Yoda always had a unique way of speaking, but in Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Cloneshis dialect was drastically changed to be nonsensical. In the Original Trilogy, he was known for being both whimsical and sagacious, and his lines often had hidden meanings once fans reordered their words.

When Yoda arrived on Geonosis with a troop transport full of clones to save the outnumbered Jedi, he said, "Around the survivors, a perimeter create." which didn't make any sense even by Yoda standards. He should have said, "Around the survivors, create a perimeter", in the same way that "Judge me by my size, do you?" is just, "Do you judge me by my size?".

8 "Would it help if I got out and pushed?"

The Original Trilogy was brimming with wise-cracks and sardonic humor, which often created an exhilarating and witty tone. Some lines, however funny, were planted so firmly in Earth's 20th century that they sounded odd coming from characters who'd spend their whole lives in space.

When Han Solo couldn't get the Millennium Falcon to make the jump to hyperspace, Leia quipped, "Would it help if I got out and pushed?", as though the ship was a beater car with a bad transmission or a faulty battery.

7 "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up! I'm quite beside myself. This is such a drag."

According to Star Wars: The Annotated Scripts, C-3PO was almost depicted as a smooth-talking used car salesman in the Original Trilogy, but when much of his wise-cracking dialog was given to Han Solo's smuggler character, he was turned into a fussy British butler. This allowed for him to deliver clever, witty dialog throughout those movies.

In the Prequel Trilogy, however, he was a protocol droid who only seemed to speak one language; "Dad Jokes", in a "Dad Puns" dialect. In the span of a minute during the Battle of Geonosis, he cracked no less than three terrible jokes once he was knocked down, leaving R2-D2 to drag him out of harm's way.

6 "Hi. I'm holding for General Hugs...Leia has an urgent message for him. About his mother."

One of the many divisive aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi was its peculiar use of humor to de-escalate dramatic situations. The Original Trilogy did this more successfully, whereas the second film in the Sequel Trilogy did it awkwardly. One of the greatest offenses was the exchange between Resistance pilot Poe Dameron and General Hux aboard the latter's dreadnought.

Dameron opened the exchange with an "urgent communique for General Hugs". That line alone would have been clever, but then Dameron had to make a "Your Mama" joke, not only embarrassing himself, but brutally dismantling any threat Hux had become after Star Wars: The Force Awakens (and greatly reducing the stakes).

5 "Master Skywalker. We need the Jedi to return because Kylo Ren is strong with the dark side of the Force."

No sooner had Rey tracked down Luke Skywalker to Ahch-To than she felt compelled to deliver him one of the most inane messages of all time; the reason the Jedi needed to return was because Kylo Ren was "strong with the dark side of the Force". She never mentioned that he had killed Han Solo (Luke's friend), or that the First Order had wiped out an entire system of planets loyal to the Republic.

Luke might have felt compelled to help had he known any of those things, but instead she told him what he already knew. Kylo Ren had already made it clear he was strong in the dark side (though perhaps not completely consumed by it) when he murdered Luke's students and destroyed his Jedi Temple.

4 "No, no it's because I'm so in love with you!"

Much fun has been made of the romance that blossomed between Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, which culminated in their secret wedding. It was an aspect of the Prequel Trilogy that didn't get better as the movies went on, and by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith it reached its zenith with a dialogue exchange so maudlin it almost didn't make sense.

Anakin admired Padme brushing her hair and called her beautiful, which prompted her to reply, "It's only because I'm so in love." Not about to be outdone, Anakin declared, "No, no it's because I'm so in love with you!", which somehow didn't make Padme divorce him.

3 "My parts are showing - oh my!"

Threepio was always reduced to comic relief in the Original Trilogy, but his incessant droning was usually for the benefit of the character development of someone around him. Many of fans' beloved characters got in a good barb at Threepio's expense, and he gave as good as he got.

In Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menaceit was revealed that Anakin Skywalker built Threepio, but didn't have time to finish him before he left for his Jedi training. When R2-D2 first met who would become the other half of their dynamic duo, the protocol droid gasped, "My parts are showing - oh my!", and he never recovered the shame, because somehow droids were concerned about their "junk" hanging out.

2 "Exqueeze me!"

Jar Jar Binks was blamed for much of the poorly received humor in the Prequel Trilogy, but luckily most of his antics were confined to the first installment. One of his very first lines is, "Exqueeze me!", which told audiences all they needed to know about the sort of character he was going to be.

Jar Jar could certainly be unintentionally humorous, but every time his behavior was played for intentional laughs, the Gungan didn't fair particularly well. Luckily his role was altered for the remainder of the movies when he was made a -nearly- mute Senator, although the clueless politician could be blamed for Palpatine's rise to power.

1 "I don't like sand. It's rough and coarse and it gets everywhere."

Perhaps, when Anakin Skywalker was chatting with Padme about "sand", he thought it would be a proper metaphor for his need for control. After all, living on a planet like Tatooine, where sand is impossible to escape, might temper a feeling of helplessness.

Instead, the line came off as completely randomly inserted, a means to follow up with something that wasn't "rough and coarse", like Padme's soft and smooth skin. The galaxy's worst pick-up line somehow worked its magic, and Padme leaned in for a kiss.
