Netflix is quenching their audience's thirst for new content by releasing at least one new original movie a week in 2021, including O2. The streaming platform's slate is overflowing with A-list talent. O2 isn't among the ranks of its flashy blockbusters, but instead a more low-key horror offering.
The planned 70-movie slate in 52 weeks is frankly unprecedented. But with the state of cinema in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, it's not a surprise. Major studios continue to have no choice but to delay their releases until the virus subsides and theaters are deemed safe again. Some movies decided to forego their theatrical runs in favor of a streaming platform like Netflix, adding to the streaming platform's already booming 2021 slate. Netflix is even looking to buy more 2021 studio movies.
COVID-19 may still force Netflix to shuffle around the release dates of their upcoming original films. But nonetheless, fans can rest assured the streaming platform will take care of their content needs. French filmmaker Alexandre Aja's O2 is one to look out for. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming horror film.

At the time of writing this article, a release date has yet to be announced for O2. This shouldn't come as a surprise. Netflix announced their full 2021 slate via a sizzle reel that showed brief images and titles for 27 of its upcoming movies. None of those titles were shown with release dates attached. Netflix has only announced the release dates for a small batch of films dropping within the first quarter of the year. This move is likely to account for any delays or shuffles in their schedule that may come as a result of the ever-fluid coronavirus situation. At this point, the only thing that can be confirmed is that O2 is due out sometime this year.

The O2 cast is led by Mélanie Laurent, known for roles in movies like Now You See Me and Inglorious Basterds. She replaced Noomi Rapace as the lead, who had previously replaced Anne Hathaway. Mathieu Amalric, Malik Zidi, Marc Saez, and Eric Herson-Macarel join her in the O2 cast.

O2 follows Laurent's character after she wakes up in a medical cryo unit. But the catch is that she has no clue who she is or how she ended up in the box. She has to quickly regain her memory and figure out a way out of the box before she completely runs out of oxygen. O2 comes from The Hills Have Eyes and Crawl director Alexandre Aja. Keep an eye out in the coming months as more details about O2 become available.
