Peaky Blinders Ending After Season 6, Will Continue In Another Form

0

Peaky Blinders will end with its upcoming season 6, BBC has officially confirmed. First premiering in September 2013, the BAFTA-winning period gangster saga takes place in Birmingham, England, right after the events First World War. The story focuses on the eponymous urban youth gang and its charismatic leader Thomas "Tommy" Shelby (Cillian Murphy). They rise from thuggish street hoods to become the leaders of a powerful crime syndicate. Over the years, the UK crime series has featured appearances from A-listed performers, including Tom Hardy, Anna-Taylor Joy, and Adrien Brod.

In season 5, Peaky Blinders found its central Shelby family grappling with the 1929 Wall Street Crash's aftershocks. Season 5 also introduced Sam Claflin as a fictionalized, villainous version of the British Minister Oswald Mosley. Though Tommy lays out an elaborate ploy to assassinate the Minister, Mosley manages to escape alive in the final episode. The show ended with an explosive cliffhanger, with Tommy pointing a pistol to his head, intent on committing suicide after being driven over the edge. Fans have since been anxious to learn about Tommy's fate.

Showrunner Steven Knight posted a statement to Peaky Blinder's official website, confirming that, after a hiatus, the show was back in production for season 6. In his message, he also confirmed that the forthcoming season would be the last for the series. Thanking all his fans, Knight stated that the upcoming season would be better than all the parts that have been released for the series so far. Additionally, as he concluded his note, Knight subtly hinted towards the continuation of the franchise. He suggested that once the show ends, the story will continue in some other form.

"Peaky is back and with a bang. After the enforced production delay due to the Covid pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher. We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form."

In May 2018, Knight affirmed the possibility of Peaky Blinders getting a seventh season. He also indicated that after the show ends, it could probably be followed by a spin-off series or a film adaptation. Now, however, the potential for season 7 has been ruled out by the show's cancellation. But the show's creators are still inspiring hope that Peaky Blinders isn't completely finished. Adding to Knight's statements about the story continuing in some form, Executive Producer Caryn Mandabach also said, "the world of Peaky Blinders will most definitely live on."

The news that season 6 will be the last for the Birmingham clan will likely devastate the show's fanatical global fanbase. After all, the ending is somewhat surprising as many had expected Peaky Blinders would live to see season 7. But after a year's delay in production due to the Covid-19 induced lockdown, it sort of makes sense for the show to bow out early. Hopefully, even after the show ends, ardent fans will continue their association with the beloved franchise. For now, fans should seek solace in the fact that despite the harsh conditions in the UK, Peaky Blinders is returning to tell one final tale. The last season must be savored as a celebration of the memorable series.
