The Witcher Characters, Ranked Least-Most Likely To Win The Hunger Games
Some of The Witcher characters would feel right at home in the Hunger Games, while others would struggle.
The Witcher universe is filled with all sorts of powerful characters. From sorcerers to fierce warriors, to the titular witchers, the Continent has no shortage of impressive and even terrifying beings. Because of its medieval setting, it's clear that this world is hard and cruel. Constant wars are fought, and living conditions are perilous.
Should the Continent somehow merge with Panem, these fellows would perhaps not find it as shocking or hard to conceive. They are used to magic, after all. Folks like Geralt and Calanthe would feel right at home in the Hunger Games, while others like Jaskier and Ciri would find it harder to accept. One thing is certain, though, and it's that their Games would be one of the most exciting the Capitol's ever seen.
10 Jaskier
A human with seemingly no special abilities, other than his apparent prolonged youth, Jaskier will certainly be the first to fall. Despite knowing his way around the world, he's very sheltered and very much prefers the comfort and facilities of a palace, rather than the harsh realities of the great unknown.
He depends entirely on Geralt while in the arena, but not even the White Wolf can keep a perpetual eye on the charming bard. A stray arrow is Jaskier's undoing, and while Geralt likes to pretend like Jaskier is more of a nuisance than a friend, his loss definitely hits him hard.
9 Istredd
An adept sorcerer with a noble heart, Istredd is one of the first people to show true kindness to Yennefer. He's also quite knowledgeable, and is shown to be an avid reader and committed student.
While not much is revealed from him during season one, what little is shown proves Istredd might be more book than street-smart. And as everyone knows, the Games are a place where brawns are just as, if not more important than brains. Istredd tries making alliances, but he's quickly betrayed, and his story promptly ends.
8 Cahir
The commander of the Nilfgaardian army and quite the tracker, Cahir is an unexpected threat in the arena. Everyone knows he's a dangerous man, but none quite understands how terrible he can be if left unchecked.
Unlike the books, where Cahir is more of a tragic hero, the show focuses almost entirely on his villainous side. He goes into the Games with the sole purpose of winning and getting glory for himself and his kingdom. He's probably the one that strikes Jaskier down, making everyone else realize how much of a threat he can grow to become. He's quickly dispatched soon after.
7 Calanthe
A savage and unforgiving warrior queen, Calanthe is no stranger to the cruel realities of war. Indeed, she's seen far too many battlefields and taken too many lives during her many years atop the throne of Cintra. To her, the Games are no different than any of the other battles she's won.
Things prove more difficult than expected, though, as there are several tributes with far more tricks than her. And while she has many sponsors on her side, more out of respect to her title than actual likability, she's still no match for the carnival of sorcerers and enhanced warriors out for her blood. She almost makes it to the halfway point of the Games but dies before reaching it.
6 Tissaia De Vries
Unlike the books where she is extremely powerful, the Tissaia in the show is a lot more passive and overall, less impressive. Her abilities are implied, but never truly shown, not even in the climactic battle of Sodden Hill.
Still, her place as rectoress of Aretuza means she's at the very top when it comes to mage power. Kinder and more caring than she seems at first sight, she still goes through the Games with all the tactics and precision she's acquired over the years. In the end, though, it's one of her former pupils that strikes her down, proving that in the end, the student indeed surpasses the master.
5 Fringilla Vigo
Fringilla is shown to not only be extremely powerful, but cold, cunning, detached, and willing to do everything to win. As the sorceress who leads the Nilfgaardian invasion, Fringilla gets plenty of chances to show her power in season one.
She uses every trick on her bag to make sure she wins the Games. Her cool and inexpressive personality does little to endear her to audiences or sponsors, who actually grow to resent her. Rooting for her demise, the Gamemakers throw everything they have against her, and she eventually falls on one of their traps. She dies soon afterwards, a victim of her own pride.
4 Vilgefortz Of Roggeveen
In the books, Vilgefortz is quite powerful, but the show only gives a hint of this. Charming and perfectly capable of disguising his true intentions, Vilgefortz makes it to the very end of the Games by lying and pretending. Finally revealing his duplicitous nature, he kills Fringilla and turns his attentions towards the remaining tributes.
Thanks to his successful charade, he manages to win the audience's support, who stay in his camp even after his treachery has been revealed. He receives several gifts to help him get the edge, but not even he can go against the final alliance of three. The combined powers of a witcher, a sorceress, and a princess manage to take him out easily, to the great disappointment of everyone in the Capitol.
3 Ciri
The Princess of Cintra holds a lot of power. An incredible amount, to be honest, judging by the few clues the show provided. However, she's completely untrained on it, which means that it only surfaces on occasion.
While season 2 of The Witcher will devote time to Ciri's training, judging by the first photos that have come out, as of now, she's still very much unfamiliar with her abilities. Geralt's fierce and almost absolute protection certainly gets her to the final leg of the competition. However, the only foe left is one who not only has no problem in getting rid of her but actually can do so. As such, Ciri falls, leaving only two tributes vying to become the ultimate victor.
2 Geralt Of Rivia
Heartbroken over the loss of Ciri and forced to go against the woman he loves, Geralt goes into the final battle of the Games with a less than enthusiastic attitude. Tired of fighting, more emotionally than physically, and with no one by his side, he refuses to keep contributing to the Capitol's thirst for blood.
As a witcher, Geralt doesn't really mind dying. If anything, death has always been a part of him, doing the things he does. Still, no monster ever proved to be as effective as the foe he's up against, and when she strikes him down, he dies knowing he did everything he possibly could've.
1 Yennefer Of Vengerberg
Extremely powerful and capable of far more than even she dares imagine, Yennefer has made a lot of sacrifices to achieve her power and status, and she keeps making them, even in the Games. After killing Ciri, Yennefer knows that the only thing that stands between her and victory is Geralt, and while she struggles at first, she's finally able to land that killer blow.
Yennefer does not emerge from the Games happy or feeling like a victor. On the contrary, she feels quite guilty and more alone than ever. However, she's always known that in life it's kill or be killed. Given the options, she'll always go for the former.
