Iron Man's MCU Ally is the Father of a Different Armored Avenger

0

The 2015 revamp of Marvel Comics' New Avengers was responsible for shifting the status quo of the Marvel Universe in a major way by swinging the door open to several new characters within the Marvel Universe of superheroes and villains. Suddenly, the Avengers name was a lot more flexible, and the team ultimately opened up to offshoots including different rosters of New Avengers and even the U.S.Avengers. One of the most interesting new heroes to emerge from this process was the offspring of a classic character integral to the life of Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.

Al Ewing (Immortal Hulk, Avengers) and Gerardo Sandoval (Absolute Carnage: Scream, Deadpool)'s New Avengers #1 introduces yet another armored hero to the world of Marvel Comics. In this comic, fans meet the younger daughter of Iron Man's war-weary savior Ho Yinsen: Toni Ho. A child prodigy, Toni is understandably not too fond of her father's famous sacrifice to save Tony from assailants before Stark's escape to pursue a life of fighting crime. To honor her late father's great sacrifice, Toni Ho has become the Supreme Leader of the newly heroic A.I.M. while operating as a superhero of her own on the side.

The younger Toni's endeavors aren't all focused on super heroics. In her downtime, Ho has managed to attain multiple doctorates at the California Institute of Technology. Caltech for short, the historical school has been home to several past Marvel alumni in the comics including Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, and Bill Foster. After college, Toni would join a new version of the formerly villainous science organization A.I.M. (rebranded as Avengers Idea Mechanics). Though a large departure from its past comics iterations, A.I.M. is still in need of leadership at the helm and the group enlists none other than Toni to get the job done. When the world is in need of a new team of Avengers, Ho is even enlisted to become a member of the all new U.S. Avengers, led by mutant Roberto da Costa, a.k.a. Sunspot. With her Iron Patriot armor, Ho would become a valued member of the team of patriotic heroes.

Toni's father Ho Yinsen has been a part of Marvel canon since his first appearance in the 1963 anthology comic Tales of Suspense #39. It was Yinsen who was responsible for saving Tony Stark's life in Asia, before helping Stark design his Iron Man Mark I suit and securing him safe passage back to the states as a changed man. Since 1963, the Yinsen character has been translated to several forms of Iron Man media including the 2008 MCU feature film Iron Man, played by actor Shaun Toub.

Toni began with a huge suit of armor similar to Tony Stark's Hulkbuster suit, taking on the name of the Iron Patriot. As she gained more experience with the equipment and fell in love with partner Aikku Jokinen, she shifted her suit to entirely non-lethal armaments and scaled it down to something more similar to Iron Man's traditional suit. Meanwhile, as A.I.M. shifted back to its evil ways, Toni managed to keep her own cell alive, rebranding it R.E.S.C.U.E. and continuing to fight for justice and progress in Marvel Comics. Yinsen may have given his life to save Iron Man, but the genius inventor is left behind his greatest legacy in his daughter Antonia.
