What Is Geraldine's Necklace in WandaVision? Logo & Meaning Explained

0

The third episode of WandaVision saw Geraldine helping Wanda when she went into labor, after which an uncomfortable exchange happened between them made worse when Wanda noticed the necklace Geraldine was wearing – but what is it and what does it mean in the series? Although the Infinity Saga has now come to an end, the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has a lot of projects coming up for its future phases, and this time they are not limited to the big screen. The MCU is now properly expanding to the realm of streaming, and its first TV series (exclusive to Disney+) is WandaVision.

Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision follows Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they live the idyllic suburban life in the town of Westview, where they keep their powers secret. However, there’s something wrong with their seemingly perfect family life, with things happening too fast, them not remembering how they got to Westview, and the scenarios changing in the blink of an eye. In addition to that, Wanda has rewound time to fit her ideal world, there have been a couple of glitches, and some characters have hinted at this quiet town being a creation of Wanda, either by trying to contact her through different devices or by infiltrating this perfect town. Such is the case of Geraldine (Teyonah Parris), Wanda and Vision’s neighbor introduced in episode 2 and who played an important role in episode 3, now set in a 1970s scenario.

WandaVision episode 3 “Now In Color” saw Wanda’s pregnancy happening way too fast, with her giving birth that same day, and as Vision ran to get the doctor, Geraldine arrived. Wanda couldn’t hide her pregnancy anymore and Geraldine helped her deliver her twins, Billy and Tommy. Wanda then mentioned she’s a twin too and that her brother’s name was Pietro, to which Geraldine asked if he was killed by Ultron. This created a lot of tension between them as Wanda realized that Geraldine knows too much and she might not be from Westview after all, especially after noticing the sword necklace she was wearing, and though Geraldine tried to change the subject and act as if she hadn’t said anything, by the end of the episode Geraldine was cast out from a wall of TV static and was surrounded by S.W.O.R.D. agents.

It’s no secret by now that WandaVision is the introduction of S.W.O.R.D. to the MCU, but what remains to be seen is their role in the creation and control of Wanda’s idyllic world. Geraldine, like the Beekeeper from episode 2, works for S.W.O.R.D., as revealed by her necklace, and so far, S.W.O.R.D. agents are not allowed into Wanda’s world, as she rewound time to get rid of the Beekeeper and she expelled Geraldine. In the comics, S.W.O.R.D. stands for Sentient World Observation and Response Department, and it’s the world’s premier space defense program, being all about extraterrestrial problems. For WandaVision, however, the name was changed to Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Department, which fits the MCU a lot better as Wanda was once considered a potentially dangerous “sentient weapon”.

Wanda’s intense reaction to seeing the S.W.O.R.D. necklace was made worse after she found a helicopter toy with the logo in episode 2 and the presence of the aforementioned Beekeeper, so she knows there are various threats that can put an end to her perfect world next to Vision. It remains to be seen exactly what S.W.O.R.D.’s role in WandaVision is, how they are involved with Wanda’s version of Westview, and if Geraldine will make it back to it in future episodes or if she will continue working on it from the outside.
