Sex And The City: 10 Times Samantha Said Everything Fans Were Thinking
Even to this day, Samantha Jones remains one of Sex and the City's most popular characters. She's many fans' favorite gal on the show, so many were disappointed to hear she wouldn't be coming back for the revival series. Her liberated, no-prisoners attitude, charming and empowering personality, and hilarious take on everything, from sex to the workplace, are just a few of the reasons why everyone loves Samantha.
Samantha's refreshingly honest approach often clashed with the other three girls' more conservative demeanor. More than once, the girls, especially Charlotte, were scandalized by Samantha's remarks. But to audiences, miss Jones was a breath of fresh air, saying all the things everyone's always wanted to say, but maybe were too afraid to.
10 Another Man
Samantha's relationship with Richard Wright is full of drama. Because she's very aware of his reputation, she never really trusts him. During the season four finale, "I Heart NY," Samantha suspects he might be cheating on her. Wearing a wig, she spies on him and eventually discovers him with another woman.
She then goes to meet her friends and is informed by Charlotte that Miranda gave birth to a boy. "Just what the world needs," Samantha says, unimpressed. "Another man." Her dry delivery makes this quote all the more hilarious and considering what she just went through, poignant too.
9 A Child And The City
While having a working lunch in the season six episode "A Woman's Right to Shoes," Samantha is scolded by the waiter for using her cellphone. She then asks why she is forbidden to speak on her phone, yet the child across from her is allowed to yell and make a mess. The waiter says he can't do anything about that, and Samantha takes it upon herself to remedy the situation.
"I understand that your child and I have to co-exist in this city, but perhaps you can take him somewhere more appropriate for a happy meal, so I could have a happier one?" How many people have not wanted to do something like this? Kids can be loud and obnoxious, and Samantha stays classy while speaking some necessary truths.
8 Not Here For Gossip
In the terribly named episode "Are We Sluts?" Samantha's building is robbed. The burglar enters the building behind one of Samantha's late-night visitors, which prompts the older and conservative neighbors to throw dirty looks her way and gossip behind her back.
"If you want to say something about me, say it to my face," she commands, and her neighbors basically slut-shame her and blame her for the robbery. Samantha's bravery and refusal to be attacked is admirable. So many people have been in similar situations, but not everyone has Samantha's self-confidence to raise their voices.
7 Engagement Ring Drama
Everyone knew that Carrie's relationship with Aidan was never going to work. They were simply too different, and while they try to make it work, it just isn't meant to be. When Carrie discovers an ugly engagement ring inside Aidan's stuff, she actually throws up at the idea of marriage.
Later, when telling the story to her friends, she laments about how Aidan doesn't know her style. Samantha then says something that no one else is brave enough to: "Wrong ring, wrong guy." The implication goes beyond it being an ugly ring. It's the fact that Aidan doesn't actually know Carrie, including what she likes or wants. Harry, for example, knows of Charlotte's love for romance, so he gives her a ring like the one Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor. That's compatibility.
6 Straight To The Point
Carrie's relationship with writer Jack Berger comes to a shocking end when he escapes in the middle of the night, leaving only a post-it with the words "I'm sorry, I can't, don't hate me." Furious, Carrie shows it to her friends, and as always, Samantha has the perfect way to summarize the whole thing. "The motherf**ker's concise."
What else is there to say? Nothing will make Carrie feel better, and she's far too angry to be reasonable. Samantha knows this, so instead, she goes for a light-hearted comment that won't angry Carrie further and might actually even bring a smile to her face.
5 Don't Ever Judge A Friend
Samantha, famously, has a lot of sexual escapades during the show. On one occasion, Carrie accidentally walks in on Samantha servicing the Worldwide Express guy. The columnist is understandably shocked, but then proceeds to literally slut-shame Samantha in the worst way possible.
Not one to take things in silence, Samantha confronts Carrie on her hypocrisy. "I cannot believe that you would judge me, after everything we've been through." When Carrie shamefully asks her where she's going, Samantha, like a boss, replies. "I will not be judged by you, or society." The moment is both meaningful and inspiring, considering so many people don't do the things they want to, out of fear of what others will say.
4 Standing Her Ground
Samantha first meets Richard in the episode "Belles of the Balls," when she tries to get the PR position for his chain of hotels. She gets the meeting through a former fling who also happened to build Richard's new hotel. The hotelier later uses this against her, telling her he doesn't want to get "into all that."
Hurt, Samantha leaves, but not before she speaks the hard truth about Richard's sexist behavior. "If I was a guy, you would've shaken my hand, bought me a Scotch and given me a key to an office. It's amazing, a guy with such innovative vision can be so short-sighted." It's sad that this terrific quote is still relevant in 2021, even if some progress is being made.
3 So Over Carrie & Big
Once Carrie and Big break up for the second time, Carrie enters a phase where all she does is talk about him. She says she's the best thing that ever happened to him, and that she's not angry, but just pities him instead.
Her three friends can't take it anymore and organize an intervention. "Honey, you're obsessed with talking about Big and frankly, we can't take it anymore." Samantha's words are like a breath of fresh air. Carrie always was selfish and unhealthy when it came to Big, so to hear someone say it out loud is great. Audience members related to her because, at one point or another, they too might've been inclined to say the same to one of their friends, who were also obsessed about a relationship.
2 Everyone's Always Wanted To Do This
In the season five premiere, "Anchors Away," Richard keeps calling Samantha, wanting to apologize for cheating on her. She finally agrees to see him and meets him in a bar. He orders her a dirty martini and she, cool as a cucumber, takes it and throws it in his face.
"Dirty martini, dirty bastard," she says, before leaving the table. Throwing a drink at someone's face is the epitome of a dramatic, soapy moment, one that doesn't happen often in real life. The fact that Samantha pulls it off and looks absolutely fabulous while doing it surely left some fans wanting to do it themselves.
1 Samantha, Self-Love Expert
The ending to Samantha's complicated affair with Richard comes in the season five episode, "Luck Be an Old Lady." During a trip to Atlantic City, she catches him staring at other women, which convinces her he will cheat again. She tries to catch him in the act, only to discover he is actually being faithful.
Samantha realizes she will never have peace of mind as long as she's with him and ends the relationship. He tells her he loves her, but she's had enough. "I love you too, Richard. But I love me more." It's such a powerful statement, one that will always be relevant. Often, people put others' needs before their own, especially in relationships. One must never forget that the relationship that counts, first and foremost, is with oneself. Keeping this in mind is the easiest way to navigate the complexities of romance.
