VFX Artists Show How Luke's Mandalorian Cameo Could Have Looked Better

0

A group of VFX artists work to create a better CGI Luke Skywalker for The Mandalorian in this new video. Though the entertainment industry ground to a halt in 2020, The Mandalorian proved there was still much excitement to be found. The second season of Disney+'s first live-action Star Wars show featured plenty of surprises for fans, including the amazing finale moment that featured Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker. The iconic Jedi arrived in the final moments of the episode to collect baby Grogu and train him in the ways of the Force. No one knew about Luke's presence on The Mandalorian finale beforehand, and fans have been reeling ever since.

Despite the rapturous reaction Luke's Mandalorian cameo received, however, it earned some criticism from fans over how he looked. Hamill was on set during the filming of Luke's scene, but he had to be aged down with CGI to make him look like he did around the end of Return of the Jedi. All things considered, the CGI worked, but some felt a deepfake would have looked far better, or that perhaps a new actor could have been brought in (such as, say, young Luke fan cast Sebastian Stan).

Plenty have chimed in about Luke's CGI on The Mandalorian, and now the Corridor Crew has tried their hand at doing a better job than the Disney+ show. This team of VFX artists have shared plenty of tidbits about how certain pieces of CGI have come together, and this is an interesting look at how The Mandalorian could have utilized a different strategy when creating their Luke. Check it out down below.

It's impressive to see how the Corridor Crew's CGI differs from The Mandalorian's, and it's true that the former manages to inject a bit more emotion into Luke's facial expressions. This is hardly the first video to put a new twist on Luke's Mandalorian appearance, as another video used deepfake technology to recreate him. As often happens when CGI is used to recreate a particular character, The Mandalorian's approach to Luke Skywalker will likely always be debated among fans.

Regardless of the quality of the CGI, though, it was undeniably a thrill to see Luke on The Mandalorian. Hamill shared his own feelings about the cameo, which is to say he was thrilled and grateful for the opportunity. Though it seems unlikely that The Mandalorian will be able to pull this off again, audiences hope to see another Luke appearance sometime in the future. Since Luke is now training the show's MVP, Grogu, it just might happen. Only time will tell.
