Captain America: 10 Times Steve Rogers Was a Total Himbo
Himbos are an incredible group of people. A combination of the words "him" and "bimbo," a himbo is, defined as, "an extremely attractive but vacuous man." Himbos are not necessarily stupid, though they can be quite lacking in the common sense department. They are unassuming, naive even, at times. Himbos are also kind, sweet, supportive, encouraging, They have been described as the antidote to toxic masculinity because of their sheer idealism.
Steve Rogers fits a lot of these descriptions. He is strong, imposing, tall, and muscular, but never threatening. He's idealistic, a genuinely good man who just happens to be a superhero. Steve is far from stupid, but his inner himbo has come to light more than once during his time in the MCU and fans love him even more for it.
10 10 Bucks Says
After the Tesseract is stolen by Loki, Fury interrupts Steve's gym session to tell him about the situation. He warns Steve that the world got even stranger since the 1940s, but Cap remains skeptical.
When Steve first sees the inside of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarrier, he concedes defeat. Without showing any visible emotion, he simply hands Fury his $10 bucks, his eyes too concerned marveling at his surroundings. Steve is a man of his word and throughout his arc during the Infinity Saga, he keeps being surprised by the events around him. By the time he goes into space in a talking raccoon's ship, he's used to being surprised but he never stops adorably marveling. The way he hands over the check, owning his own shock with good humor qualifies him as a himbo for sure.
9 Flirting Is Not His Strong Suit
Time and again, Steve tries and fails at flirting. His awkward attempts are often charming and only slightly uncomfortable. This shows that even with all his physical assets and achievements, Steve is still humble and doesn't think too highly of himself. Deep within, he's still that kid from Brooklyn.
Peggy is actually won over by his clumsy flirting attempts and so is Sharon, to a lesser degree. He never actually tries to flirt with Natasha, and the two instead become close friends and perhaps even confidants, but they still have an endearing chemistry and a good friendship which cements Steve's himbo status. It can be argued Steve's aw-shucks kind of charm extends to the many close male friendships he has as well, with Bucky, Sam Wilson, even Tony Stark, and more.
8 A Hero To The Crowds
Shortly after his transformation in The First Avenger, Steve is used as a propaganda tool for the US government. Initially shy to speak in front of large crowds, he soon becomes comfortable in his position and even excels at it. Things change when he is asked to speak in front of a group of actual soldiers, who humiliate and chase him away from the stage.
Steve's attitude remains strong and hopeful throughout the whole ordeal. Even if he feels like a dancing monkey who only does what others tell him, he still believes he's doing good and contributing to something bigger than him, which is the only thing he ever wanted. The earnestness with which he wants to help, combined with his uncertainty in himself and his new super-serum-ed body, is endearing and prime himbo territory.
7 He Understood That Reference
One of the most famous moments from The Avengers happens when Fury makes a Wizard of Oz reference. He says he'd like to know how Loki turned two of the brightest men he knows into his "personal flying monkeys." A baffled Thor expresses confusion, prompting an overly enthusiastic Cap to declare he did, in fact, understood that reference.
The scene has become a successful meme and one of the most memorable in the film. It's a wonderful reminder that, at heart, Steve is very much a man of his time. His child-like enthusiasm at finally understanding something is also quite sweet.
6 He's Knocked Out The Enemy Before
After he discovers that Bucky has been taken prisoner, Steve defies Captain Phillips and ventures into enemy lines with the help of Peggy and Howard Stark. He is successful in infiltrating Hydra's base and frees a bunch of prisoners, but Bucky is not among them.
He instructs the men to exit the base and says he'll keep searching for Bucky. When they express doubt at his plan, he answers that he knows what he's doing because he's "knocked out Adolf Hitler over 200 times." The moment is meant to be humorous, but it also shows just how optimistic Steve can be, that he would say such a thing with a straight face. His undaunted press into saving Bucky is also prime himbo behavior, he wants to help, he thinks he can, and consequences, and facts, be damned.
5 He's Not Ready For That
Throughout the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Natasha tries to convince Steve to go out on a date. She gives him multiple suggestions, including Kirsten from Statistics and Sharon Carter. He repeatedly declines, saying he's too busy. In reality, he's taking his time because he's still trying to find the right partner.
At one point, Natasha suggests "that girl from accounting." Steve says her name is Lilian and she has a lip piercing. "I'm not ready for that," he declares, sincerely. A man who knows his own limitations is a man to be admired.
4 Fondue-ing
As Howard and Peggy fly Steve into enemy lines to rescue Bucky, the elder Stark tells Peggy they should stop at Lucerne for a late-night fondue. Steve doesn't know what fondue is and instead thinks Peggy and Howard are engaged in some kind of physical relationship.
Steve actually turning the word "fondue" into a verb and asking her if she's "fonduing" with Stark is one of his most himbo moments. It doesn't come from a place of stupidity, but rather ignorance. When he eventually learns what the word means, he perhaps does end up feeling a bit silly, though. Still, in true himbo fashion, Steve never takes out his embarrassment on others.
3 Only One God
Once Steve is back in the action, he takes his commitment very seriously. He's extremely determined which also means he can be quite single-minded. When Thor irrupts into the Quinjet and takes Loki, Iron-Man immediately pursues. Natasha advises Steve to skip the fight since Thor and Loki are "basically gods."
"There's only one God, ma'am," he says, dead-serious, "and I'm pretty sure he doesn't dress like that." Nevermind that he calls Nat "ma'am", Steve's answer is earnest, straightforward, endearing even. Even after all he's been through, all he's seen, he still has faith and believes in a higher power. A man of conviction, Steve is not one to stray from his own path.
2 Language!
The opening sequence of Avengers: Age of Ultron features the team raiding a Hydra base commanded by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. When Tony crashes against the energy wall that's surrounding the base, he lets out a "S**t!". Cap then scolds him for his language, something that doesn't go unnoticed.
Throughout the rest of the film, numerous characters make fun of the fact that Steve doesn't like bad words. He's a good sport about the whole thing, even if he does get slightly annoyed at times. It's one of the many moments that remind audiences that Steve is, at heart, a simple and moral man who only wants to do what's best for everyone.
1 Not The Word He Would Use
After Nick Fury's supposed assassination, Steve and Natasha become S.H.I.E.L.D. fugitives. They go to a mall where they use an Apple store to decrypt a flash drive left to them by Fury. Hunted by the S.T.R.I.K.E.team led by Brock Rumlow, Natasha instructs Steve to kiss her when Rumlow closes in on them, saying public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable. "Yes, they do!" he proclaims before she kisses him.
"Still uncomfortable?" she asks once their kiss ends. Steve, ever the gentleman, simply replies "Is not exactly the word I would use." Well played, Mr. Rogers.
