Marvel Redoes Gwen Stacy's Tragic Death With Falcon | Screen Rant
Warning! Spoilers for Heroes Reborn: Marvel Double Action #1 below!
Marvel Comics is revisiting one of the greatest tragedies in comic history, as they will redo the death of Gwen Stacy in their upcoming Heroes Reborn Universe, but with Falcon dying instead. In a reality with no Avengers, Falcon will partner up with Nighthawk - Marvel's version of Batman. However, tragedy will strike when Falcon is killed by the Green Goblin in an homage to the classic comic moment.
The Night Gwen Stacy Died is one of the most important comics in Spider-Man history, as The Amazing Spider-Man # 121-122 featured the shocking death of Peter Parker's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, at the hands of the Green Goblin. The arc by Gerry Conway, Gil Kane, John Romita, Tony Morterallo, Artie Simek, and David Hunt shocked readers as Marvel killed off the popular character in an extremely tragic way - and Stacy's death would impact the Spider-Man (and Marvel Comics) titles for years. Now, that moment is getting revisited but with a big twist.
CBR.com revealed that the classic arc will be getting remixed in the Heroes Reborn universe in the upcoming Marvel Double Action #1 by Tim Seely, Dan Jurgens, and Dave Johnson. Marvel's main line will soon jump into an alternate reality, where the Avengers are no more and the Squadron Supreme takes their place. Everything has changed, as it seems to be a trick by Mephisto. As part of that arc, the new one-shot will show that Nighthawk - a pastiche of DC Comics Batman - will take the Spider-Man role and will see his partner Falcon killed by the Green Goblin. The cover for the one-shot shows Nighthawk holding that universe's version of the iconic comic cover.
The comic is not only an homage to beloved The Amazing Spider-Man story, but also lays the groundwork for another hero, Miles Morales, who's not Spider-Man in this reality, to become the new Falcon. Last month, Marvel Comics revealed that Miles will become the Falcon in the Heroes Reborn Universe - and with the death of the original Falcon - it certainly seems possible that he'll become the new sidekick for Nighthawk. Even Marvel's Batman needs a Robin... or in this case, a different bird-typed hero altogether.
It's going to be fascinating to see Marvel reimagine one of its most tragic stories using completely different characters in Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy's roles. Falcon's death might be what propels Nighthawk into joining the Squadron Supreme and becoming one of Earth's greatest heroes - as like many comic book characters, grief can become a major driving factor into heroism (or villainy). Heroes Reborn: Marvel Double Action #1 is in comic stores this summer.
