On March 4, 1971, the Calgary Herald reported on the front page that then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau devoted his speech at a $50-a-plate fundraising Liberal dinner to issues of gender equality. "They (women) ask only, and deserve, that we remove the remaining barriers to their full participation in the Canadian community," Trudeau said. Outside the hotel where the Toronto dinner was held, protesters shouted their disapproval of Trudeau on a number of issues, but focused on, "Down the rich, up the people . . . $50 is a month's groceries."
