Space Jam 2 Images Reveal 3D Tweety Bird & Lola Bunny
New images for Space Jam: A New Legacy have been released, showing LeBron James taking to the court with 3D-animated versions of Tweety Bird, Lola Bunny, and more. The new film, which has been in various stages of development for years, is a follow-up to the 1996 classic that starred Michael Jordan alongside the Looney Tunes cast. Space Jam 2 is directed by Malcom D. Lee and produced by Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler.
The original Space Jam pitted Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, and the Looney Tunes gang against the Monstars – cartoon aliens come to kidnap the Tunes and use them as a theme park attraction. The film also featured other major NBA stars of the day, including Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Muggsy Bogues. Space Jam: A New Legacy will once again send the Looney Tunes to the basketball court, this time led by LeBron James in a virtual reality duel against the “Goon Squad.”
After a long wait, fans are finally getting a proper look at Space Jam 2 with a series of images released by EW. The pictures show LeBron in a bright “Tune Squad” jersey, taking to the floor with the Looney Tunes crew, highlighting Lola Bunny and Tweety Bird’s new 3D looks in particular. A poster-style image shows James standing with a broader roster of Looney Tunes characters, and another shows James’s fictionalized family. There are also some behind-the-scenes pictures of the production team and costar Don Cheadle, who plays the antagonist AI program Al-G Rhythm.
The story of Space Jam: A New Legacy will focus largely on LeBron’s relationship with his son Dom (Ceyair J. Wright) and the rest of his family. In order to help reconnect with and save his son from Al-G Rhythm, James must join forces with the Looney Tunes to take on the Goon Squad in a virtual world called the “Warner 3000 entertainment Server-verse.” The exact details of how and why the basketball showdown takes place have yet to be revealed.
In addition to the Looney Tunes characters and the core cast of James, Cheadle Wright, and Sonequa Martin-Green, Space Jam 2 will feature cameo appearances from a number of NBA and WNBA stars, including James’s real-life teammate Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Diana Taurasi, Damian Lillard, Chris Paul, and Nneka Ogwumike. After two and a half decades, the new movie still has big shoes to fill. With luck, Space Jam: A New Legacy will live up to its name when it releases in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16.
