10 Strangest Romances In Justice League Comics | ScreenRant

0

Director Zack Snyder made some news recently when he revealed an abandoned plot point in Justice League: The Snyder Cut was Bruce Wayne falling in love with Lois Lane. The primary DC super-team Justice League has as many strange romances in the comics over the years, involving relationships between team members and outside the group as well.

Given the many iterations of the superheroes as well as the many different universes of DC Comics, some of them get very strange indeed. While some are cringe-worthy in hindsight, others are just plain weird or fun, considering the circumstances.

10 Superman And Big Barda

Big Barda is a character from the Fourth World mythos of DC Comics, and married to Scott Free, AKA Mister Miracle. Despite this, she got into a very tawdry romance with Superman back in the 80s. This was actually the result of the manipulations of a villain called Sleaze, who wanted to make an adult film starring the two heroes. It was very strange. The marriage between Scott and Barda was depicted in the 2016 Eisner Award-winning mini-series Mister Miracle by writer Tom King, who also wrote The Vision, a comic that inspired WandaVision.

9 Batman And Wonder Woman

Batman has had many onscreen love interests, and Wonder Woman has been one in the Justice League Unlimited animated series. The two were a couple for a number of episodes and shared a sweet if unlikely romance, the two have very little in common. The animated relationship also manifested in strange ways that underscored how odd it was. At one point, Batman serenaded Wonder Woman - who had magically been turned into a pig - in a nightclub.

8 Baby Lois And Superbaby

One of the absolute craziest Justice League romances occurred back in the Silver Age of comics. In Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #57 from May 1965, Lois Lane brings home a baby version of Superman, who she and Lana Lang then promptly fight over. It turns out he's from an alternate reality and the real Superman was around the whole time but didn't intervene. These types of silly stories were common for DC in the 50s and 60s, which often depicted stories that had no bearing on continuity since it wasn't as valued as highly as it would be later.

7 Harley Quinn And Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn is fully in love with Poison Ivy in the comics and animated series on HBO Max, but there are potentially other DCEU characters she could fall in love with. One is herself. Harley, an unusual member of the Justice League for sure, met an alternate universe version of herself in Harley's Little Black Book in 2016.

Harley being attracted to herself isn't so crazy considering her gonzo character, but it is definitely one of the more unusual pairings in the history of the Justice League.

6 Flash And Zatanna

The Flash is famous in comics and on television for his romance with Iris West. Before they got married, Flash had some interesting pairings with other members of the Justice League. One of them was Zatanna, one of DC's most powerful magic users. This was a strange and brief affair, though. The two flirted with each other back in the early days of the Bronze Age and even had dinner together in Justice League of America #187. But then the romance was just dropped and never mentioned again like it never happened.

5 Batgirl And Blacksun

A more recent odd romance occurred between Batgirl and a villain named Blacksun. Heroes and villains getting together isn't so odd (see Batman and Catwoman) but this one was different: Blacksun is the son of Oswald Cobblepott, the Penguin. The two had a connection, sparked from his first appearance in Batgirl #6 in 2017, and founded in their mutual interest in computers. But Ethan Cobblepott is as ambitious and ruthless as his father and the odd pairing went nowhere.

4 Hal Jordan And Arisia

The romance between Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Arisia is one of the most cringe-inducing romances in comic book history. That's all to do with the fact that Arisia was thirteen years old when she began pursuing Jordan. He declined, but she then used her powers to age herself up appropriately and that was okay for him. The affair goes on for quite a while but left a pretty long shadow over both characters. DC wanted to forget about it so much they killed her off in the mid-90s, but was later ressurected.

3 Superman And Wonder Woman

On one hand, Superman and Wonder Woman seem like a natural fit. They're both essentially gods who will live long lives and share many of the same values. But no one in the comics has ever made it work, and it's because they're not a great couple at all. That was born out in the New 52 era of DC Comics in the early 2010s.

In this reboot of DC continuity, Superman and Wonder Woman engage in a passionate affair that ultimately goes nowhere. The same thing happened in Action Comics #600, an earlier comic where these two kiss and then sort of try to forget about it. DC did, too, erasing the entire affair from history with another reboot.

2 Batman And Black Canary

Black Canary has had a few different versions in the DCEU and the CW Arrowverse. She's had as many in the comics too, and one version of the character had a very passionate affair with Batman. This occurred in the more or less out of continuity mini-series by the legendary team of writer Frank Miller and artist Jim Lee. The two had never had much of a connection at all before, and their intense relationship - which had them making time for each other as their enemies lied dead or unconscious - was pretty unusual for both.

1 Superman And Maxima

Superman and Wonder Woman are at least understandable. Superman and Maxima never made any sense. Maxima is an alien princess of the planet Almeric, who seeks out Kal-El because the two are a genetic match. She wants to have kids with him and won't take no for an answer. It gets very awkward as her persistent drive to be with him continues through her being a villain, a member of the Justice League, and even past the point when Superman had married Lois Lane in one of DC's most important weddings.
