Zombieland Game Revealed For PSVR Is All About Headshotting Zombies
XR Games, the crew behind The Angry Birds Movie 2 VR: Under Pressure, has announced plans to release Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever on PlayStation VR sometime this year. Sony's dedicated VR device has received plenty of love in recent weeks, following word from the company that a second PSVR headset is in the works.
At the time of the announcement, PlayStation CEO and President Jim Ryan additionally confirmed that dev kits for the unit were being sent out to developers. Fans shouldn't get their hopes up for a 2021 launch date, though. Still, there's a treasure trove of interesting content coming to the original PlayStation VR throughout the year. Just yesterday, Sony unveiled a total of six new titles that will make their way to the platform as the next several months wear on. From a JRPG-inspired MMORPG to an action-packed, free-running shooter, it seems players are in for quite the treat. Even DOOM 3 has a VR iteration coming to PSVR in a few short weeks. Another beloved IP filled with hellish creatures is on its way to the platform, too.
Today, developer XR Games announced Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever, which comes to the Oculus, SteamVR, and Viveport devices this spring; a PSVR version will launch on an unspecified date in 2021. Created in conjunction with Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, Headshot Fever takes places six months after the events of the movie sequel - Zombieland: Double Tap. Players will join forces with the franchise's four main characters, Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock, in an adventure that borrows cues from 1990s light-gun games and racing titles such as Trackmania. Due to the significance of speed and accuracy, Headshot Fever boasts an arsenal of weapons, powerful upgrades, and an Adrenaline system, the latter of which rewards players for nailing two headshots in a row by slowing time. In addition, a global leaderboard system will allow players to challenge friends and other players the world over.
Since Zombieland: Double Tap hit theaters nearly two years ago, XR Games' Headshot Fever seems like a tie-in game that's come a little too late. But who knows, maybe the shooter's overall quality and fun factor will distract from what seems to be rather odd timing? On this, we'll have to wait and see.
PlayStation VR doesn't necessarily suffer from a shortage of horror or zombie-centric experiences. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners provided plenty of both last year. It offered up a stellar survival title, though, whereas Headshot Fever taps into the on-rails shooter space, something the PSVR could arguably use more of in its catalogue.
