Outriders Update Will Change Legendary Loot Drops & More In the Demo
A post to the game's subreddit from its developers revealed Outriders legendary loot will be changing alongside other updates to its demo. Outriders is the upcoming co-op action-RPG from developer People Can Fly and publisher Square Enix, blending cover-based shooting with loot grinds, RPG skill development, and more borrowed from successful titles like Destiny and Gears of War.
While the initial excitement for Outriders was fairly muted when compared to other games like Destiny 2, the title's demo period has been doing a lot to change that. The Outriders demo has been praised for how much content it is giving away to players, and what it's demonstrated so far has been engaging gameplay, the sort that fans are beginning to grow interested in grinding through and optimizing. Outriders demo progress will also be retained if players choose to purchase the full game once it launches, too, further incentivizing people to check out the title and sink time into learning its systems and gameplay loops.
Following the high level of community engagement from the Outriders demo, Square Enix Community Manager thearcan posted to the game's subreddit to provide an outline of changes coming to gameplay prior to launch. Among many changes being implemented based on fan feedback was one that seems to stem more from developer concern: legendary loot drops and where they appear. Due to the appearance of a Destiny-style loot cave that allows triple chest runs, players have been able to farm a lot of strong weapons, and now Outriders legendary loot will no longer appear in chests as a result.
The change is being made not out of a desire to make the game intensely grindy, but to prevent negative effects when it fully launches. Because Outriders demo progress will be maintained for players who purchase the full game, there are concerns that some players who farm too much through the demo will have a lop-sided experience when it comes time to play through the main game at launch. As a result, legendary loot is become rarer, as well as epic items, which won't show up in shops and from vendors to help further stifle progression that may have been going too fast.
It's worth pointing out that this is a change that's being made to the Outriders demo to help make the full launch more exciting and challenging for fans. There's a chance these changes will be reverted or adjusted following launch, and as they currently stand, they're being made in good faith with the hope that players simply won't find the game too easy or exploitable as time goes on. This a good change for the health of the game, and the fact that so many players are already interested in it means Outriders is certainly a game to watch in the build-up to its release date.
Outriders will release on April 1, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Google Stadia.
