Wonder Woman's Mom Will Become One of DC's Most Powerful Heroes
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Black Adam Chapter 2
The final chapter of Future State: Black Adam reveals that Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons and mother of Wonder Woman, will join the gathering of monitors and guardians known as the Quintessence. Because the Quintessence is made up of some of the most powerful members in the universe, it makes since that the queen would join their ranks, though it does confirm just how powerful she truly is as the Quintessence is responsible for reshaping the very multiverse itself. However, this also seems to be a new indication for DC's plans for Hippolyta, who is being set up for much more significant role in the present as well.
In the DC Universe's past, the members of the Quintessence featured the likes of the Wizard, Zeus, Nabu, the Kryptonian god Rao, Highfather of New Genesis, and the Spirit of Vengeance known as the Spectre. Working as a team of like minded beings, the Quintessence has actually orchestrated several key events in the timeline of the DC Universe, such as the creation fo the Justice League. However, many of these beings have since removed themselves, been killed, or been replaced by equally powerful and capable successors. As such, the members of the Quintessence in recent years have shifted around as well, featuring the Goddess Hera, the Phantom Stranger, the Guardian of Oa Ganthet, and more. Most recently, Wonder Woman herself was asked to join their ranks in Infinite Frontier #0 now that she's ascended to a higher cosmic plane after the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal.
However, it looks as though the members of the Quintessence will have changed once again in the future. They now include Wonder Woman's mother Hippolyta among their number in the second chapter of Future State: Black Adam from writer Jeremy Adams with art by Fernando Pasarin. The Wizard and Spectre have rejoined the group of multiversal monitors as well, joined by Barda as the new Highmother and Sinestro, last of the Wielders of Light.
With specific regards to Queen Hippolyta, it's going to be rather interesting to see how she might ascend to this new plane of existence as one of the Quintessence. The mother of Wonder Woman has certainly started to take more of an active role in the DC Universe in recent comics, such as in DC's Endless Winter crossover event that saw her as a member of an ancient Justice League. Furthermore, she'll soon be joining the new upcoming Justice League being written by Brian Micheal Bendis as well after taking up the mantle of Wonder Woman herself.
It seems as though DC Comics has some intriguing plans in the works to make Queen Hippolyta more prominent in the DC Universe, both in the present and in the future with the Quintessence. Regardless, it's certainly going to be exciting to see the woman who raised and trained Wonder Woman following in her daughter's footsteps in future issues by stepping away from the island of Themyscira and into the world of man..
